If you were to believe SLAM magazine, the most significant transaction of this NBA Offseason has been Shawn Bradley’s retirement. Yet, as ground-breaking as that certainly is, it hardly compares to the ramifications of the Lakers re-hiring Phil Jackson or the Spurs re-upping Robert Horry. Or the Hornets re-signing Chris Andersen.

Since Desipio left the NBA back on Draft Day, 8 weeks worth of additions, decisions and omissions have transpired – most of them under the radar of the casual fan. So here, in team by team order, are all the transactions you need to know about of the NBA’s off-season so far;

July 30 – Agrees to trade Boris Diaw and 2 lottery protected first-round draft picks to Phoenix for Joe Johnson and his recently signed 5 year, $70 million contract. Minority owner Steve Belkin disagrees with the deal, but is out-voted by the other equal partners. But Belkin, who is also the Hawks’ Governor, refuses to promulgate the deal with the NBA’s Head Office, thus stymying the trade, and the wishes of the club.

August 05 – The Hawks’ other owners meet to oust Belkin as Governor.

August 10 – Court grants Belkin an injunction.

August 19 – Belkin agrees to sell his stake in the team, and the deal finally goes through, unchanged. It is indeed a lot to give up for a versatile, 6-7 athlete who’s neither an All-Star nor a natural point guard, but the Hawks had to made this trade, if only for the reason that after so many years of abject mediocrity they actually found a big name free agent who wanted to play for them.

August 02 – Signs Brian Scalabrine to a 5 year, $15 million contract, as Danny Ainge mistakenly thought his name was ‘Brain’.

August 02 – Less than a month after declaring he would not sign-and-trade Antoine Walker, Ainge signs, then trades, Antoine Walker to Miami for the Trade Thrown-in Trifecta – a stiff (Curtis Borchardt), a chump (Qyntel Woods), and a Euro (Albert Miralles). Plus 2 second-round picks.

July – Literally nothing.

August – Virtually nothing (re-signed Kareem Rush and Brevin Knight, traded for Jake Voskuhl).

August 15 – Matches Toronto’s offer to Chris Duhon to a 3 year, $9 million contract.

August 24 – Signs Malik Allen and re-signs Othella Harrington, thereby making sure they have immediate replacements just in case Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry do not return. Which they will anwyay.

July 11 – Re-signs Zyndrunas Ilgauskas to a 5 year, $55 million contract.

July 11 – Agrees to sign Larry Hughes to a 5 year, $60 million contract.

July 19 – Agrees to sign Donyell Marshall to a 4 year, $22 millon contract.

July 29 – Decides not to re-sign Jeff McInnis, as his name does not contain a ‘Y’ and an ‘L’.

August 15 – Waives Michael Finley under the League’s new Amnesty Rule.

August 19 – Signs Doug Christie to a 3 year, $10 million contract, to fill Michael Finley’s role and roster spot.

August 26 – Signs Rolando Blackman, formerly Dallas’ Director of Player Development, as an assistant coach, just 10 days after Mark Cuban publically criticised the team’s Player Development.

August 18 – Signs rookie Free Agent C Luke Schenscher, who, in his own words, likes “fishing, watching footy and long romantic strolls on the beach” and that he “came to Georgia Tech on a football scholarship but the coach was upset with my poop mouth and I began playing basketball instead.

July 19 – Agrees to a buy-out of the final 3 years and $18 million of Larry Brown’s contract; paying him a one-off sum of $6 million.

July 21 – Spends some of the money they just saved on Flip Saunders, signing him to a 4 year, $20 million contract.

August 23 – Signs Dale Davis to a 2 year, $7 million contract. In a show of solidarity, Davis changes his surname to ‘Wallace’.

June 30 – Releases Rodney White, and, having already allowed Nikoloz Tskitishvili to leave as a free agent, this means that the 2 players Chris Mullin acquired from Denver just 6 months ago in exchange for Eduardo Najera, Luis Flores and a 2007 first round draft pick have been utterly squandered.

July 18 – Agrees to sign Stromile Swift to a 5 year, $30 million contract.

August 26 – On a technicality, decides to re-sign the 39 year old Dikembe Mutombo as a player, rather than as an assistant coach (or team mascot).

August 15 – Releases the already retired Reggie Miller under the League’s new Amnesty Rule.

August 15 – Does not release either Austin Croshere (2 years, $17 million), Jonathan Bender (2 years, $15 million) or Scot Pollard (1 year, $6 million) under the League’s new Amnesty Rule.

August 03 – Signs Cuttino Mobley to a 5 year, $42 million contract. Then, purely co-incidentally, waives Kerry Kittles and Ric Brunson.

August 12 – After stoically resisting a plethora of offers for Marko Jaric over the past 2 months, Elgin Baylor trades him for Sam Cassell, a 35 year old point guard with a history of injury problems (bad) who is in the final year of his contract (good).

July 14 – Vlade Divac, the best 26th draft pick in the history of the first round (narrowly edging out Mark Randall and Geert Hammink), retires.

August 03 – Trades Caron Butler and Chucky Atkins to Washington for Laron Profit and former #1 overall pick Kwame Brown.

August 22 – Signs Aaron McKie off the Amnesty Wire. McKie will wear Jersey #2, as this was his points per game average last season.

August 02 – Trades Bonzi Wells, Jason Williams and James Posey (average age 28, combined averages of 28.6 points, 8.5 rebounds and 11.2 assists in 190 games) for Bobby Jackson and Eddie Jones (average age 33, combined averages of 24.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 105 games).

August 05 – Signs Damon Stoudamire (turns 32 next week, 15.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists in 81 games) to a 4 year, $17 million contract.

August 02 – Pat Riley acquires Williams, Posey and Walker in a massive 5 team, 13 player trade.

August 02 – Riley re-signs Shaquille O’Neal for 5 years, $100 million.

August 02 – Riley re-signs Udonis Haslem for 5 years, $31 million.

August 03 – Riley starts planning the route for next June’s Championship Parade.

July 07 – Agrees to re-sign the summer’s hottest Free Agent, Michael Redd, to a 6 year, $90 million contract.

July 08 – Agrees to sign Bobby Simmons to a 5 year, $47 million contract.

July 08 – Signs Terry Stotts to be the team’s next Head Coach.

July 25 – Signs Lester Conner, nominally an assistant, to be the team’s next next Head Coach.

July 28 – Fred Hoiberg undergoes successful heart surgery on an enlarged aortic root.

August 15 – Fred Hoiberg released under the League’s new Amnesty Rule.

August 28 – Fred Hoiberg can no longer be found on NBA.com’s official player listing.

July 21 – Agrees to re-sign the 39-year old Cliff Robinson.

August 09 – Backs out of a trade for Shareef Abdur-Rahim, claiming he failed the physical.

August 09 – Instead, trades for 30 year old Marc Jackson, who averaged fewer blocked shots per game last season than the 39-year old Cliff Robinson.

August 02 – Acquired Rasual Butler and Kirk Snyder and gave up Roberto Duenas as part of the massively complicated Antoine Walker/Eddie Jones/Jason Williams trade. This transaction gained the Hornets next to nothing in terms of actual talent, but at least made them feel a part of the NBA again.

August 29 – Mopping up.

July 13 – Signs Jerome James to a 5 year, #30 million contract

August 15 – Keeps Allan Houston and releases Jerome Williams via the League’s new Amnesty Rule (now no longer known as the Allan Houston rule).

August 03 – Signs Keyon Dooling to a 3 year, $10 million contract.

August 11 – Releases Doug Christie via the League’s new Amnesty Rule.

August 22 – Signs Ruben Boumtje Boumtje, who has career averages of 1.0 points, 0.3 blocks and 0.9 personal fouls per game despite ranking fourth on Gerogetown’s blocked shot list behind Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo.

July 19 – Agrees to re-sign free agents Kyle Korver and Willie Green once the new CBA is approved.

July 24 – Agrees to re-sign free agent Samuel Dalembert once the new CBA is approved.

August 02 – CBA Approved, Korver and Dalembert re-signed. Green not re-signed as he had recently suffered a knee injury.

August 09 – Green undergoes knee surgery.

August 16 – Green undergoes a second knee surgery.

August 30 – Green remains un-signed.

June 28 – Trades Quentin Richardson to New York.

July 30 – Agrees to sign-and-trade Joe Johnson to Atlanta.

August 03 – Signs Raja Bell, to replace either Quentin Richardson or Joe Johnson.

August 11 – Watches as free agent Steven Hunter gets signed to a 5 year, $17 million contract by Philadelphia.

August 18 – Signs Brian Grant, off the Amnesty Wire, to replace Steven Hunter.

August 02 – Trades Shareef Abdur-Rahim to New Jersey for a 2006 first round draft pick.

August 03 – Waives Derek Anderson via the League’s new Amnesty Rule. Waives Nick Van Exel outright, not via the League’s new Amnesty Rule.

August 09 – Nets trade voided after Abdur-Rahim fails physical. Abdur-Rahim becomes a free agent, thus becoming the 4th player from Portland’s 2004/05 t0 be lost during the offseason for no return. And what’s more worrying is that Theo Ratliff is not amongst them.

August 02 – Trades Bobby Jackson to Memphis for Bonzi Wells.

August 12 – Shareef Abdur-Rahim passed physical, signs as a free agent for 5 years, $30 million. And so, very quietly, one of the league’s best franchises has completely rejuvenated itself.

July – parties.

August 29 – Signs Nick Van Exel as a free agent.

July 05 – Ray Allen happily agrees to re-sign with the Sonics for 5 years, $80 million.

July 06 – Nate MacMillan leaves the Sonics and signs with Portland. Ray Allen mystified.

July 18 – Bob Weiss named new head coach, given 3 year deal. Ray Allen concerned.

August 23 & 24- re-signed Vitaly Potapenko and Damien Wilkins. In an offseason where they have already lost free agents Antonio Daniels and Jerome James – and still have Vladimir Radmanovic, Flip Murray and Reggie Evans worryingly uncommitted – the Sonics instead have prioritised the signatures of a pair of their least effective players from last season. Ray Allen bloody annoyed.

August 03 – Signs G Jose Calderon.

August 09 – Re-signs C Pape Sow.

August 22 – Re-signs F Matt Bonner. Now, which of these 3 players is made up?

August 02 – Trades Curtis Borchardt, Raul Lopez and Kirk Snyder for Greg Ostertag, who they believe will “make them a better team”. Sure, Utah were bad last season, but they weren’t that bad.

August 23 – Former Jazz off-guard Jeff Malone, who has been steadily inflating since retiring 10 years ago, has been named as coach of the Florida Flame NBDL Team. When and if Jerry Sloan retires, Malone is positioned for the job.

August 02 – Signs Antonio Daniels to a 5 year, $30 million contract, in an attempt to replace the productivity of Larry Hughes. Or, at the very least, to replace the productivity of Juan Dixon.

August 03 – Trades Kwame Brown, who had been a major disappointment and had actually been suspended from the team before the end of last season, to the LA Lakers for Caron Butler and Chucky Atkins.
