It seems like only yesterdecade.

You guys are all pretty brave around here, saying that we shouldn’t worry that Kerry Wood is hurt, because we weren’t counting on him anyhow. But it’s gotta just stick in your craw that Wood is injured again. It’s sticking in mine.

Let’s be honest, everyone knew that I was full of shit when I said that Dempster is my closer. Using Dempster as your closer with Kerry Wood sitting down there in your bullpen is like getting Castle Grayskull for Christmas and using the box it came in as a fort. Only Wood was never inside of Dempster. As far as I know.  No matter how much Dempster begged.

In recent years, when you heard that phrase “sidelined indefinitely” coming from the Cubs training staff, it meant, “you’ll never hear from this guy again.” To use it in a sentence, “Once she stops whoring herself out for sports tickets and releases her sex tape, Sarah Spain will be sidelined indefinitely.”

Kerry Wood turns 30 in June of this year. Greg Maddux had four Cy Young awards in his closet by age 30. I expected at least that many from Wood when I first saw him come up. Who’d have thought he’d peak at 21?

It is possible that this is “just a tweak.” Like Prior “just needs to work on his mechanics,” and Eyre “just needs to stop going to Old Country Buffet,” and Jim Edmonds “just needs to stop with the bukkake.”

But Hendry’s patience with Wood has to be just about up. It’s great that the kid is playing for cheap this year, and I certainly hope I get to look down at the bullpen sometime in April and see him sitting there, ready to go.

But it chaps my ass that we weren’t counting on him, and hurts even more that we were right not to do so.
