Don't throw that towel just yet. With the news that the wrist that Brian Urlacher broke last night will cost him the rest of the season, the Bears are believed to be negotiating with another Hall of Fame linebacker to fill that void.  Derrick Brooks, launched from Tampa Bay in the offseason hasn’t been able to find a home, despite recent try outs with New Orleans and Oakland, claims to be in game shape and ready to play as early as Sunday (scoff.)

Now, I’ll grant you that Derrick Brooks is an awesome guy, and was once a great football player, but you can’t put up flags red enough when nobody brings you in for a mini camp or a training camp.  So even if this happens, it’s probably not likely to make a huge difference over the Bears just letting Hunter Hillenmeyer play the one linebacker spot he’s actually sort of good at.

However, the Bears also lost Pisa Tinoisamoa for at least a month last night, so now there are two linebacking spots open, so maybe you need to call Derrick Brooks or Zach Thomas just for depth’s sake?

If the Bears sign Brooks, he’ll play Lance Briggs’ outside linebacker spot with Briggs moving inside.

And, as my newest Twitter friend Brad Biggs says in the above piece, the Bears also have lost (terrible cornerback but good special teamer) Trumaine McBride for an undetermined period of time, and will probably have to bring in the great Darrell McClover for another go-round.

I enjoy making fun of Peter King as a blogger (which is what his horrendously self-serving Monday Morning Quarterback is), but he can still bring it occasionally when he writes features, and last year he did a very good one on Derrick Brooks getting ready to face Adrian Peterson and the Vikings.  It’s worth a read.

And, if you missed it, there’s a running diary-thing on last night’s game for you to mock.
