This thread is here for all of our wild trade speculation and reaction. Who knows, maybe we can get Dave Kaplan to run another of our rumors on WGN today?
If the Cubs trade for Nomar, Orlando or even (dare to dream) Dave Hansen! this will be the place to comment on it, bitch about it or plan the Jim Hendry effigy burning.
What a game last night for me! No errors and I even got a double and scored a run. You sure you want to trade me?
I heard on WGN radio last night that I was getting traded to the Cubs. Then I found out that the "reporter" was repeating a rumor floated on this Web site.
So now I know I’m coming to town!
Whoo hoo! Par-teeee! See you guys on Saturday!
Love,
Nomie
Does anyone here really think Hendry has the cojones to pull the trigger on a real blockbuster? I mean, his most likely deal will be Alex Gonzalez for… Orlando ‘Alex Gonzalez’ Cabrera. Not exactly an inspirational move. But hey, at least the Cubs will get a light-hitting Latino shortstop whose name doesn’t end in ‘ez.’ I’m sure the Cardinals and the various wildcard contenders are quaking at the thought.
I raised my batting avg up to .243.
I know, everyone’s already compared these guys… but it’s worth repeating.
Last 3 years:
Cabrera: 279/331/424 (avg/obp/slg)
Gonzalez: 243/303/406
Career:
Cabrera: 266/315/405
Gonzalez: 242/302/393
Oh yeah, and this year:
Cabrera: 243/296/332
Gonzalez: 218/236/371
Now, is this the kind of trade that changes the tone? Energizes the team? Instantly upgrades the team’s outlook?
Nomar?
last 3 305/349/523
career 323/370/553
this year 321/367/500
Imagine that in the lineup every day, compared to the black holes we’ve been putting out there. Now, that changes the tone! Is it worth a starting pitcher? When you have the depth of the Cubs’ rotation and farm system, and when you most likely move to a four-man rotation in the postseason?
I think so. Now, does Hendry have the nads to make a real move?
No, Hendry doesn’t have the stones. Kenny Williams has stones. He makes stupid moves, but he has stones.
Hendry does riskless moves.
I’ll bet he’d be scared to wear a yellow tie to Trib Tower.
I’m the size of grapefruits. Well, except for the left one, which was crushed when Jim was carrying those presents and broke his leg.
As for the trade, One-Eye tells us Jim talks to him at the urinal and he wants to do the Cabrera deal. Jim knows it’s a lateral move, but he feels it will be safer than coughing up Clement and his potential 2 or 3 wins more than whatever 5th starter is trotted out there in Matt’s place.
Think of it this way: Would you trade Matt Clement for Glendon Rusch, straight up (knowing that Clement will probably get you 2 wins more than potato-faced Glendon)? Is that 2-win differential going to help the Cubs or hurt them? In a five-team Wild Card race, yeah, it very possibly could be the difference maker.
Is Nomar going to win you those two games you might be coughing up in a Clement trade?
So, is the rumored move smart? We don’t know. We’re just the balls. The head does all the thinking…
Besides, all indications are Nomar is staying put. One-Eye told us the Sun-Times is really down on the possibility of the Clement-for-Nomar deal. No freakin’ way, they say. When are they ever wrong?
I had stones and was stupid. I traded a #1 pick for two guys who would be out of baseball 9 months after I got them!
Call me Kenny McFail Hendry!
I was at Miller Park last night and all the blowhards around me were talking about the Clement-for-Nomar trade as if it were a done deal. Apparently, they all listened to Kappy at 3 on ‘GN.
Regardless, many were ill-informed and felt the trade was imminent or already took place and the appearance of Gonzo in the game was a formality.
Speculation ran high for much of the game, and all the Cubs fans in my section (the place was easily 60-40, with the majority wearing Cubbie Blue) lamented the offense with each out, fueling the "We need Nomar" sentiment.
Maybe we fans can goad Hendry into making the deal. Hell, we goaded Korey into having a good month by booing his ass.
Maybe we should boo his ass some more. He’s back to OBP of .253 with 24 times on base compared to 27 Ks since July 1.
How can we goad Hendry? Mass calls to Kathy and Judy?
Here is a column from May that detailed every Hendry trade to that point.
https://www.desipio.com/archives/00000546.htm
He hasn’t made any "risky" trades, but to be fair, he hasn’t really had to.
Here’s what I mean. There’s an inherent advantage in being one of the few teams in the game with the ability to take on other players’ full salaries. It’s the sole reason they were able to get Lofton and Ramirez for Bobby Hill and some chaff.
Hendry, over the last two years has markedly improved the team and how many players has he traded that the Cubs miss?
Dontrelle
Hee Seop
Juan Cruz?
I don’t think his trading history shows a lack of balls to make a big trade, just to this point he’s been able to get what he wants for less.
Case in point: We all freaked out when he couldn’t get the Marlins to give up Mike Lowell. But the reason wasn’t that Hendry wouldn’t do it, it’s because the Marlins figured out they were in a real pennant race. So Hendry traded for E-ramis. That seems to have worked out.
When he traded Hee Seop for D Lee people freaked out because Choi never got a chance to prove he was the stud the hype machine said he was supposed to be. Lee, after a predictable (and frustrating) slow start is the better player in every way.
I’m 100 percent in the get Nomar camp, and if we don’t I’ll be disappointed (I’m ready to get disappointed because at this point I don’t think the Sawx will even give Hendry a chance to decide whether or not to trade Clement), but it seems to me that a lesser GM, or a knee-jerk reactionary GM would have taken the Cubs out of the Nomar derby already by filling the shortstop hole with a lesser player earlier this month. (Kind of like Hendry did with Alex Gonzalez…oh, you know what I mean.)
What Hendry is probably not wild about is that if he trades for Orlando Cabrera on Saturday, the world’s going to be awfully disappointed, when in fact, like E-ramis and Mike Barrett before him, he’ll be upgrading the talent at a position and hoping that the player begins to play up to his ability, like E-ramis and Barrett have done.
Getting Orlando’s not a failure.
Not getting Orlando or Nomar is, however.
We’ll see what happens.
Andy:
You are more right than wrong. But, with a huge stockpile of starting pitching prospects and few holes into which they can fit over the next few years, not getting Nomar because he wants to hang on to Mitre and Nolasco/Sisco/Guzman/Brownlie would be a failure.
You can’t use all these guys in Wrigley. Trade a couple for guys you can use.
Rumors at this time (noon Thursday):
San Diego is in a holding pattern on a potential trade with Arizona for Steve Finley because they want to move Jay Payton (Nomar’s buddy and former GTech teammate) and Brian Lawrence to the Red Sox for Derek Lowe, first.
The Marlins are not wild about sending two good prospects to Arizona to only get Jose Contreras from the Yankees and that trade appears to be dead.
Joe Garagiola, Jr. is expected to make one last request to the Unit to reconsider a trade to either Boston or an LA team before the deadline. The Boston trade would involve the Cubs and Nomar. The Dodgers trade is not believed to involve Paul LoDuca, and the Angels will give up Casey Kotchmann (now injured) but not Dallas McPherson.
The Twins and Pirates are still trying to finish up a trade for Kris Benson, but the Twins do not want to part with AAA stud Jason Kubel. If the Pirates were smart they’d take Michael Cuddyer and play him at third base for the next decade.
Doug Eyechart (thanks, Andy, that’s so much easier to spell) is headed to either Boston or the Yankees, though the Twins are not wild about trading him to a potential playoff opponent. They should be, since he can’t hit to save his life.
Gerry Hunsicker has decided that the Astros are a viable playoff contender and will not trade Jeff Kent or Carlos Beltran and is instead trying to find another arm for his bullpen. Phil Garner is excited by this because he loves to have pitchers warm up six times and then not use them anyway.
The White Sox are still trying to find a starting pitcher (good luck) and may have to settle for Danny Bautista to try and fill the Magglio Ordonez void.
The Giants are no longer talking to the Expos about Orlando Cabrera meaning he’s either a Cub or an Expo on Saturday night.
I’ve got to stop reading prosportsdaily.com or I’ll go blind.
Best case scenario for the Cubs and Nomar.
Sometime today or tomorrow the Yankees actually get Randy Johnson.
The Red Sox decide they have to have Clement to counter that move and offer Nomar.
Hendry actually does it.
I fear that if the Unit doesn’t go to the Yankees, that the Red Sox won’t actually offer Nomar up.
Actually, the best case for the Cubs is that the Unit does agree to a trade to the Red Sox because that means the Cubs can get Nomar and keep Clement.
That is what’s going to happen. Our only chance is waiver’s. Don’t you remember Hendry’s castration in the off-season. Those grapefruits are gone.
We aren’t in the line-up today. We have been dealt to the Phillies for Larry Bowa and Bob Denier.
Disregard anything Deep Throat tells you; he’s dead.
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/07/28/obit.larue.ap/index.html
Unless he’s part of the Force now, and can communicate with us that way…
It IS touching that the last official act on this earth of the Infamous Deep Throat was to get on here and start some rumors.
God bless him, and Linda Lovelace, who wasn’t that hot, but jeebus she could swallow a shotgun and not even flinch.
My source tells me the deal yesterday of Clement, Gonzalez and Mitre for Nomar was indeed done–as far as Epstein was concerned. The hangup in this deal, believe it or not, is Sergio Mitre. Epstein wants an additional pitcher that can start if need be down the stretch. He does not believe he needs any bullpen help with Ramiro Mendoza looking strong in his return and Scott Williamson rehabbing.
Hendry on the other hand wants to keep Mitre for the same reason Epstein wants him; as 5th starter insurance. Especially given that he is moving Clement. I am told Hendry first offered Epstein ertswhile Cubs bullpen shadow Todd Wellemeyer, but he was turned down. He then offered Cubs AA pitcher Ricky Nolasco, but was turned down with the argument being Nolasco is just a prospect, too far away from the bigs to help Boston this year if needed.
And now they sit at an impasse over Sergio friggin’ Meat Tray. Unbelievable.
In other news, my source tells me that Hendry has definitely decided to sit pat with his bullpen. The hope is that Ryan Dempster can make a meaningful contribution, that one of Jon Leicester or Francis Beltran can be strong in the last two months, and (don’t gag) that Joe Borowski will be back to help in September. Hendry feels the asking price is too high for the few available bullpen pitchers out there (Lugo, Mesa, Urbina), and that none of them are much better than what he already has in-house.
Finally, I am told the concern over Todd Hollandsworth’s status has become acute. There is a 50-50 chance he is done for the season. Besides the back and forth with Epstein, this is where Hendry has spent his time on the phone the last 48 hours–trying to find a replacement for Hollandsworth. His attention has been focussed exclusively on Matt Stairs and Jeromy Burnitz to date, but John Vander Waal has now entered the picture with the Reds fading badly in July. In all three cases, Hendry is offering Wellemeyer and a mid-level prospect (Nolasco or Connolly to the Royals and Rockies, Matt Craig to the Reds).
I’m just saying…..
Are there any good Lesbian clubs in Chicago?
Not for me, mind you. For my teammates.
;)
SoSH has a report that says it’s the Sox who have put a hold on the trade. Theo’s apparently having "cold feet."
Come on kid, pull the trigger.
I hate being able to say "kid" to a GM when I’m 31.
Fuck SoSH. They’re candy-asses.
Is that my bobblehead in the upper right hand corner of the Trade Central banner. I hope I get royalties for that boy.
How do you like my new bobblehead? I didn’t know I played basketball, though?
Tommy, that’s me. You’re upper left.
And I think you’re Mike Cameron.
Why do my feet smell like urine?
If you want hard proof that Albert Pujols isn’t 24, then find the Ft. Osage (MO) High School Year Book from 1995. He is in it as a senior, making him at least 18 years old as a member of the class of 1995. He is at least 27 years old.
Wow, we really dug out the scum on the bottom of the bedpost for ol’ Kenny, didn’t we? In a new display of over-the-top inanity, ESPN reports that Williams traded a prospect to Pittsburgh for…nothing! The poor guy thinks Kris Benson is Bob Gibson and was so desperate to keep him away from the Twinkies–in a deluded brain fart thinking his team could actually still catch the Twins–he gave Littlefield a player just to keep him from trading Benson to Minnesota.
Yikes.
Hey, I was once traded for nobody!
Hey, #27, I was 17 when I was a senior in high school…
Hey #28, I say the Sox are going to get Cliff Floyd. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sox.asp?intID=38198121
Of course, given that he’s always hurt and says he wants to retire when his contract expires, that’s just like getting nothing.
Hey #27! The reason I wasn’t in that yearbook was that I was held back a few years. I was still in 4th grade learning how to eat paste.
Who knew that I would learn later to do that from Jim Edmonds.
Uh, Albert, that’s not paste.
Another angle that just might work. The BoSox want outfield help (http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=37870).
Fine. Give them Alou, Mitre and A Gonz and balancing cash for Nomar. Cubs play Todd Walker in left.
Lineup:
Walker
Nomar
Sosa
Ramirez
Lee
Barrett
Grudz
Patterson
I was thinking about this at 3am this morning when my daughter got up.
Cubs send Clement, A-Gon and Mitre to Boston for Nomar.
Cubs then send Brendan Harris, Kelton and a P prospect to Pit for Benson.
Cubs call up Dubois to be their new Hollandsworth.
Uh, no.
Why not #36? I said in spring training I’d play there. It gets me in the lineup everyday and I’m not the defensive liability I am at second.
Moving an infielder to the outfield is not so smart.
Guys, I’m not getting traded at all, because I’m in the starting lineup today! I can’t wait to get hacking away at anything Milton throws near me.
They have sushi in LA right? Why I always get trade? Boo!
Dodgers get:
Choi, Steve Finley, Brad Penny
Marlins get:
Paul LoDuca, Guillermo Mota, Juan Encarnacion
D’backs get:
Jayson Werth, prospects from Marlins
Don’t worry, A-Gone. All Hendry has to do is call the dugout, and Ramon has his glove ready.
Wow I get to go back to little Jack?
No problem, I’ll take Penny’s spot in the rotation. Someone other than Darren Oliver will have to take Beckett’s spot when he goes back on the DL after throwing some bloodballs tonight.
ESPN is reporting that Big Randy has agreed to sleep on the idea of accepting a trade to LA.
Charles Johnson back to the Dodgers (pending his approval)
Paul LoDuca, Guillermo Mota and Juan Encarnacion to Florida for Brad Penny, Hee Seop Choi and minor league pitcher Bill Murphy to the Dodgers.
Brad Fullmer from Texas to San Diego for a minor leaguer.
The rumored trade in 44 would be Jayson Werth, Penny and Murphy to Arizona for the Unit. A similar trade would bring Steve Finley to LA instead, and a similar trade (with more players going to AZ) would have Finley AND the Unit.
Gammons said the Cubs will send one prospect to the Expos for Cabrera tomorrow or tonight.
I think I may have Littlefield and Williams beat in the most moronic GM contest. I just traded Justin Huber and uber-prospect Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano, Kris Benson and Jose Bautista? I thought I was trading for Carlos Zambrano, Anna Benson, and Miguel Batista!!
I HATE, HATE, HATE the LoDuca and Mota trade to Florida. The Marlins biggest hole is that their bullpen sucks, the second biggest is that they get no offense from their catchers. This fixes both. Bastards.
It just means the Marlins will end up with a good enough record now that Atlanta or them (whichever one doesn’t win the NL East) will be more competition for the Wild Card.
If the Phillies hadn’t phucked all phour games in Phlorida this week, the Marlins would have sold instead of bought at the deadline.
I also think Hee Seop’s homer totals will die in Chavez Ravine.
You can’t hit my fastball!
Benson and Victor Zambrano to the Mets.
Another trade…
Comcast sends that creepy guy who’s now doing the Sox pre and post to FSN Chicago for Gail Fisher.
Today was Gail’s last day on Cubs pre and post, but have no fear, she’ll be back on the beat next year for Comcast.
It means we have to put up with Mitch Robinson’s weird "comb-forward" hairdo the rest of the way.
Not a good trade.
I was just wondering if any team in the majors will take any or all of these useless bums off our hands, ideally as a group, for a bag of used balls or something:
Roberto Alomar
Alex Cintron
Elmer Dessens
Matt Mantei
Mike Koplove
Andrew Good (who certainly does not live up to his name!)
Casey Daigle (and his girlfriend, just so we here in Arizona never have to hear about her or her dreadful "sport" again!)
Randy Choate
Carlos Baerga
And, most importantly of all, Mark Grace, off to pollute somebody else’s broadcast booth with his drivel!
Latest Gracie highlight, by the way: One night he and Thom Brennaman were talking about the Suns’ Leandro Barbosa, who is from Brazil, which speaks Portuguese. Grace eventually said: "I know Spain and Portugal are next to each other-Spanish and Portuguese? That’s like choosing between speaking Canadian and English." (Really.)
I’m NOT in the lineup tonight.
I’m packing for Chee-cah-go!
The Meat Tray is in route to make his start against the Phillies tomorrow…instead of Matt Clement.
Good observation, #52. Did you notice that I wasn’t in the lineup, either? That’s cuz obviously I was at O’Hare picking up my old buddy Nomahhh!
Felix Rodriguez is now a Philly, Ricky Ledee is a Giant.
Minaya is holding out for either Pie or Guzman to go with Gonzalez for Cabrera.
That’s going to be a long hold out.
Mmm…Pie
Mmmm…Beer
ESPN 1000’s Bruce Levine and Sons of Sam Horn all concur that Nomar is not dead yet. The particulars:
Nomar and Lowe for Clement and Cabrera and prospects to the Expos.
34 minutes….
I feel like Jack Bauer.
I feel hot…and bothered.
…only because I’m here, Elisha.
Dammitt Hendry, hurry up! I can’t carry this team on my shoulders much longer.
I did nothing?
My new nickname is Jim "No Balls" Hendry.
Prediction- NO WORLD SERIES THIS YEAR.
Chill, Jim. You have until 3:45 to release info to us. We do know that Finley is going to the Dodgers.
Instead of A-Gon, Alex better make a deal with the devil. If not, we are A-Gon from the playoffs.
Once again, today just proves the Clement factor. He can pitch good and have 10 strikeouts and still give us another loss. So why do we keep him instead of going after some real offense?
I had a great performance(0-4) again today. You’ll get to see more of that going on at a ballpark near you.
I could hit right here…
Walker
Patterson
Me
Sosa
Alou
Ramirez
Lee
Barrett
What do you think?
I think you have me about 6 spots too high.
Ok, Korey, you can bat here…
Walker
Lee
Me
Ramirez
Alou
Lee
Sosa
Patterson
Barrett
Hey, Nomaa.
How about you 2, me 8 with Lee 3, Ram 4, Sosa 5, Alou 6 and Barrett 7?
How about we jsut keep the status quo? I hate taking a chance. We were 9 over without any changes. Why try to get better? We’re fine!
Can we trade for someone who can field a groundball? You know, we could have won if not for our inability to do that today.
ESPN SAYS NOMAR IS COMING!
JAYSON STARK REPORTING NOMAR TO CUBS!!!!
DETAILS TO FOLLOW!!!!!!
Unconfirmed:
Red Sox get Clement, Cabrera, Mentky
Twins get Lowe
Cubs get Nomar
Expos get prospects, Alex Gonzalez
http://baseball.espn.go.com/mlb/index
Picture of Nomar saying he’s coming to Wrigley.
ESPN reporting Jose Contreras and his boat family to the Sox for Stevie Loiaza
and…
…wait for it….
They’re confirming their own report that Nomar is on his way to the Cubs.
Jim Hendry:
I take a back what I’ve said about you being gutless.
Dusty? Time to anchor Korey below 6th in the lineup.
Helloooooooooo!
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?sportId=10
is Nam Y. Huh David’s brother?
How are we still clueless as to the existence of even a rumor?
The Expos have sent shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the Cubs for shortstop Alex Gonzalez, third baseman Brendan Harris and Class AAA righthander Francis Beltran — a trade that might be the precursor to a four-team blockbuster that would send Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs and righthander Derek Lowe to the Twins.
The Expos-Cubs trade is confirmed, but the other aspects of the deal are still being negotiated and might not be completed. If the deal goes through, the Red Sox could end up with Cabrera and Twins first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz.
We’re reporting we got Nomar without giving up Clement.
WFLD is interviewing Barrett. Done deal. Details to follow.
But then again, we’re Andy Masur, Glen Kozlowski and Jim Memolo. So we’re clueless dumbasses.
Fox is implying that Clement STAYS.
Barrett was only saying goodbye to Gonzo!
Can this team get Nomar and KEEP CLEMENT?
ESPN is backing off Nomar.
However, Greg Maddux has asked that I play shortstop tomorrow for his 300th win.
Hendry to be on momentarily.
backing off Nomar.
It says "Stark: Garciaparra to Chicago Cubs" on the crawl.
has Nomar as tentative.
The deal is now contingent on approval by Major League Baseball because the Cubs have sent cash to the Expos in the deal to cover Alex Gonzalez’s contract.
Shortstop Nomar Garciaparra is heading to the Cubs in a blockbuster trade that also involved Expos shortstop Orlando Cabrera.
The Expos originally sent Cabrera to the Cubs for shortstop Alex Gonzalez, third baseman Brendan Harris and Class AAA righthander Francis Beltran — a trade that was the precursor to a four-team blockbuster that would send Garciaparra to the Cubs.
In other parts of the deal not yet confirmed, righthander Derek Lowe could be headed to the Twins.
If all parts of the deal go through, the Red Sox could end up with Cabrera and Twins first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz.
In addition, Dodgers outfielder Dave Roberts told Fox Sports Net that he has been traded to the Red Sox.
Saying Nomar is coming.
Here’s ESPN’s hitting bio on Nomar:
Hitting
What’s the use in "waiting for your pitch" when you can hit anything? One couldn’t blame Garciaparra for thinking that way-he swings at the first pitch more than any major league hitter, but he’s also one of the most dangerous first-pitch hitters in baseball. With strong wrists and great hand-eye coordination, it’s tough to get any pitch past him, even with two strikes. In the past two years, he’s pulled the ball and hit it in the air more often, which has cost him some points on his average but hasn’t paid dividends in the power department. Regardless, he still hits the ball hard as consistently as anyone in the game.
Does this mean the fans will boo him for not taking pitches?
Hendry just said, "We’re glad to have Nomar."
I’m glad to have goosebumps.
Holy shit.
The Cubs have Nomar and Clement. I think I just wet my pants.
"Hopefully he’ll be here (tomorrow)." – Jim Hendry
Nomar drives in the winner for Greggies 300th?
Details out.
Cubs start with trade to Twins for Capt. Eyechart. Send him to Boston with A Gonz, Harris and Beltran for Nomar. A Gonz, Harris and Beltran to Montreal for Cabrerra.
Hendry was already talking about Nomar’s agent. They clearly want to sign Nomar long term.
Cubs trade:
Justin Jones (to Minnesota), Alex Gonzalez (to Montreal), Frank Beltran (to Montreal), Brendan Harris (to Montreal).
Get: Nomar.
Jones, I believe ended up in Montreal. A freakin’ haul for the Expos. And a haul for the Cubs.
The Sox, after everything is done get Doug Eyechart and Orlando Cabrera.
That’s it?
And…Kenny Williams is all pissed off because his trade (Contreras for Stevie Loiaza) is now on page four.
bad deal for BoSox.
Nomar for Eyechart and Cabrerra?
I’m sad to call Theo a kinsman.
Is Alex Gonzalez’s oh-for four oh-for five Canadian?
