As I’m sure most of you have read by now, Jake Potter presented a column Monday that does not put yours truly in the best of light.
I don’t necessarily like the way Jake is presenting his views, but they are his views on my writing. And if he chooses to devote his columns to his views on my writing, that’s fine with me.
The internet is a forum, and sometimes in that forum there will be opinions you don’t like. That doesn’t mean everyone should sit idly by and accept those opinions. I’m not like that, either on here or on other websites.
Personally, I like the way Jake writes. I think he brings an educated point of view on certain topics that are interesting and fun to read. However much I dislike his criticism, I respect that part of his talents.
As I said in the comments section of Jake’s column earlier today, if you don’t like me or my writings, I understand that. People are entitled to their opinion.
To conclude, this site is a respite from the harsh world. While most of my fare is serious, I do try to envelop it with humor and wit for the enjoyment of you, the reader. I write the way I think is best for the Desipio readership. I will consider all of this a good faith effort to correct some minor errors of writing judgment and style.
I hope the readers who have decided on me so far here on Desipio in the negative will make a similiar good faith effort to read what I write and at least think a little about what I am writing about, without pre-determined feelings on my writing. I’m not here to change opinions, I’m here to at least have some of you think about why you have the opinions you have.
Thank you for your time.
Did BC just get fired?
As someone who once was in a similar position to BC, I can relate to how he’s feeling. I can also clearly how big a prick I had been and now understand why an entire group of people turned on me.
Who knew that "prick" was one of the curse words that doesn’t get censored?
For what it’s worth, I’d rather read anything than the hand wringing, collective ritual suicide that was going on during the first inning of the first game yesterday and the entirety of the second game. Christ! There’s some people that really need to get a life on this site. At least BC can have a couple other interests besides crying about Clement being a puss or the Cubs anaemic offense vs. Weathers.
It’s a harsh world, B.C., once you get out in it and try to earn a keep. Sitting in a dorm playing X-Box hardly necessitates a respite from the scourge of the oppressive world in which you live.
If you can keep your bottom lip from quivering, you’ll quickly realize that the pummelings you suffer in these posts would dissipate with a column that didn’t waffle between blind fanaticism and borderline suicidal laments.
It’s not you BC, it’s me. Quite clearly.
Furthermore, it has been brought to my attention that Volume 1 was both unwelcome and (gasp!) not entertaining. Thankfully, my dogs ate Volume 2 before it could be sent—or so I’ve been told.
I understand that without full closure, and the ability to see my complete thought process—some of you will label me an unsympathetic and sanctimonious ‘meanie.’ That’s what I get for posting in to-be-continued format I suppose. And more importantly, that’s what I get for attempting to be the voice of reason and fighting what I thought was the good fight.
Next time you’re on your own. Back to the harsh world…
Again, my sincere apologies for wasting everyone’s time…
I feel much better now that Jake’s off of me.
If you are going to continue writing trite cliches like "People are entitled to their opinion," then at least live by it and stop using the other hand to edit, or outright delete, the opinions that are posted by others. It’s not that difficult to understand.
You’ve expressed concern in the past that, god forbid, anyone think you’re arrogant.
Abiding and presiding over only one-sided discussions is arrogant, as is your dismissal here suggesting that readers "at least think a little about what I am writing about," as if readers’ lack of the least bit of thought and "pre-determined feelings" are the source of negative opinions and, therefore, are not worthy of being viewed by others.
"I’m here to at least have some of you think about why you have the opinions you have." Arrogance, pure and simple.
Eh … stop being wishy-washy. You don’t necessarily like it? It’s fine with you if Jake devotes his column to your writing? If you’re wrong, admit it; if you aren’t, tell ’em to stuff it.
Deleting posts that are too opinionated is weak.
DH, you need to update your scorecard. Opinions are welcome, so long as they follow the template in B.C.’s head.
1) Opinions have to be specific, and a line-by-line dissection of his article should be offered so he can counterpoint your points.
2) Criticism must be constructive, which is a poor writer’s platitude for "please don’t disagree with my opinions."
3) Any references to Mini Me are not allowed. Deal with it, or get deleted.
4) Pointing out B.C.’s homer-istic writing style when he lays out an opinion on the Illini and then quickly glosses it all over with a thick coating of Vaseline (so as to obscure the import of the article) is dismissed.
5) B.C.’s fanboy status must not be questioned or challenged.
6) Flip-flopping on the Cubs over the course of a GameCast does not warranty feedback or analysis from others.
I think you’ll find if you follow these easy rules, you too can look down on the unwashed masses, before adjusting your monacle and doffing your top hat before climbing back into the Bentley.
That’s arrogance. What B.C. practices is some form of selective memory.
Didn’t Andy just tell us the other day that "desipio" literally means to "make an ass of one’s self."
The irreverance of this place is the primary reason I visit.
Join in the fray if you like BC, but recognize it for what it is.
If you desire only thoughtful and reasoned responses, this just isn’t the place.
What is happening to this place? Desipio is now a site where the writers write about each other? That’s very close to Mariotti-esque and writing about one’s self.
Hey, I don’t really care about all this interpersonal drama. I just want to come to a site and read about the Cubs. People need to chill out and cut down on the personal attacks every time someone says one little thing they don’t agree with. This is getting worse than the freakin presidential election.
Incidentally, I was often one of the aforementioned hand wringers, but in the last two weeks a sense of eerie calm has beset me. Maybe it’s because the Cubs have won 8 of 11, but I just get the sense that they no it’s time to get serious. Also I want to slow down and enjoy Cubs baseball before that dismal 5 months of the year known as the offseason (also known as Bears and Bulls season).
Well, the Bears season was looking up, but with Mike Brown out for the season, and now Charles Tillman out for at least a month, I think I might just watch last week’s Bears/Pack game on tape every Sunday.
BC just needs to incorporate some pics of good lookin’ chicks and everything will be just fine. Right, am I right??
Good idea, perv. Here’s my girlfriend:
I thought Jake’s column was the epitome of constructive criticism. BC has invited "constructive" criticism (but not insults) while engaging in insults (not constructive criticism) of his column subjects. It’s not about "liking" or "disliking" someone, it’s about failing to meet your own standards in your writing.
BC, if you cannot take criticism (constructive or not), you are in the wrong field.
Totally agree DC.
BC- don’t hide behind your mom’s skirt. Don’t let Andy censor a friendly debate, which you, yourself, have instigated.
If you can take the heat, be a man- invite Volume 2. Step up to the plate!!!!
I am thrilled to see a Jake post anytime (whether it is in the form of sports, reality TV, or editorial criticism). At least what he says is entertaining.
