I didn't have a problem with them doing that - he's not BAD. That line is verging on respectable, and he's still young. He'll be a decent major league first baseman, I don't doubt it. It's just that Derrek... well, Derrek is a complete fucking STUD. With one or two exceptions,
anyone is going to look bad by comparison.
And none of those numbers show the effect of his defense. I would say he saves at least one out per game over an average first baseman. Some of the throws he has dug out of the dirt or otherwise corralled have been amazing.

D-Lee has some awesome stats through 6/1 and is easily the NL MVP at this point, but I also remember April/May 2004 and September 2004, so let's not get crazy yet. I am hoping that his adjustment to a new team/ballpark and his father's legal problems were the cause of those long slumps last year and I hope like hell that he leads this team into the post-season this year and for several years to come, but let's try to avoid sounding like Sox/Garland fans.

And being selective too...did you catch Len's comment on Lee during tonight's game after his homer? That was just the third time the entire SEASON Lee has swung at a 3-0 pitch. It's funny, E-Ramis has been having a typical DLee year...start out badly, and get going as the weather warms up. He's now hovering near .300 with 15HR. He's on his way to a good year...

You know what? I was thinking about this, and the buzz has always been that Aramis is an overly sensitive guy. Maybe for some unknown reason, he's just more comfortable hitting 5th? The pressure's off him a bit at #5, and he concentrate on doing this thang there without the "Cleanup Hitter" baggage. I mean, go back and look at Ramirez' numbers for 2003, 2004, and 2005 as a #3, #4, #5 and #6 hitter. I believe you'll find he's been the most productive at #5.
It's also worth noting that sandwiching Burnitz between Lee and Ramirez makes Jeromy a much more dangerous hitter too. It's hard to argue with his numbers since Dustbag put him there. His OPS is now over 850 and his BA is pushing 300. Nice.

Burnitz has a decent on-base percentage at .341, which isn't as high as Jerry Hairston or Todd Walker, but I think that these desperate times would put that platoon at leadoff. Burnitz would be a a better fit for the 2 hole than Patterson [duh] and while you still get the strikeouts you also get better on-base skills [thus far, anyway].

I actually like the Lee - Burnitz - Ramirez order. I think Ramirez is comfortable in the 5-hole (which is where he hit last year). I'm too lazy to look up where he hit when he had the monster year in Pittsburg, but I wonder if it was the 5-hole. It's obvious that Burnitz gets better hitting situations being sandwiched by Lee and Ramirez. He's produced enough for most people to be happy and even elated.
I think it was Andy ... maybe someone else here (my fact checking department is off today) that recommended Walker and Barrett at the top and Patterson, Hollandsworth/Dubois, and Neifi at the bottom.. That's something I could live with.
Actually, Ramirez's numbers have been better in the cleanup spot. This year:

But all around, in terms of fielding, running, hitting in situations, NOT leaving guys on base, starting things up...his ability to start something when we're dead AND driving in runs when we need them, and last and possibly least, NOT being an asswipe...if this keeps up all year, I'll take the 2005 Lee model.

His absolute worst 35 game stretch this season saw him collect an OPS of .814. I even cheated against my favor and added a 36th game to that, an 0-3 performance against BC's Cardinals. I certainly don't mean to say that Lee has not slumped, because he surely has, but, well, the statistics speak for themselves.
As for the inevitable "if you'd watch the games, you'd see..." argument, I do watch the games, and I know exactly why Derrek Lee is appearing to slump. He's waiting for too many picture-perfect meaty gopherballs to crush. He's excellent at going the other way, or turning on an inside pitch for a double down the line. Instead of doing that more often, he's looking dead red to pound the shit out of the ball. I can't speak for Derrek, but I would suspect his depleted HR totals have something to do with this. To support my assertion, his HR totals have increased since he started taking this approach, while his contact rate has dipped significantly.Â
I think he'll balance out eventually, even if it means we have to wait till next year (...) for him to do so. If it gets too bad, we could always supply him with Winston's and the chick from the picture Andy posted the other day -- the one with the lady who suffocated a steel folding chair by sitting on it.

Then I watch yesterday afternoon and he gets caught looking on some close pitches. It reminded me of the long stretches last season when he would get buzzed repeatedly on the outside corner, often taking called third strikes (and his numbers were a little "down" for him). What he needs to do--and what I was desperately hoping he'd do while struggling last year--is hammer that outside pitch the other way.
I think the broken wrist affected him, and he's only just now back to where he was in '05. The reason he took the pitches on the corner last year was possibly because he didn't feel he could drive the ball as well as he would have liked.

Yes, I agree with this entirely. If I've ever had a knock on DLee, it's that he takes a few too many pitches early in the count for a guy as skilled as he is with the bat. It's not as if he's a dead-pull hitter (like Soriano) who has an entire 1/3 portion of the plate that he probably shouldn't consider swinging at on 0-0 or ahead in the count.
If we're sitting here worrying about the plate approach of a guy who currently sports a 1.288 OPS, we'd better win the damn pennant.

Like Mike D said, I think his wrist still bothered him last year, and he couldn't drive those outside pitches. Given that, he was probably better off taking the close pitches instead of just dribbling them to the right side or rolling over them.
If the pitchers keep going away from him, I think we'll see him adjust and start driving the ball the other way. He's too smart not to do that.

My sophomore year of high school I was not that popular to start off. I was pretty much an asshole to anybody and everybody. Had a smart mouth and all that. I had a group of friends who were not well liked by the majority of the popular crowd because we were assholes and we liked to drink and smoke weed and punch people in their stupid fucking face.
On the cross country squad I was a bit of an outcast. The older kids didn't know me and the younger kids hated my guts.People clowned on me for hanging out with black kids, listening to rap and constantly using hip hop slang.
But this one night, at cross country camp... we saw this big as group of chicks from some other school having their cc camp in the same state park we were in. It occurred to me that we could easily wait until our coach passed out that night and sneak over to their camp to spy and maybe spot some titties or some bush or something. Oh, the wild ideas one gets when he's only 15 and tortured constantly by the horrors of masculinity.
So I pitched the idea to the team and some of the older guys were in. Some of the younger ones too. But a few of the rest were like hells to the no, we'll get caught and they'll call park patrol and blah blah blah. I called them pussies and a few more joined the party. Night fell and the coach hit the rack so off we went. Flashlights in hand, we hiked the trail over to where the chicks were camping. As we approached the campsite we killed the lights and snuck up close. The place was mostly dark but there was one tent still lit up and we could hear laughing girls inside. And a silhouette! We also saw a silhouette of a chick with big tits. She appeared to be clothed but we pointed and laughed and admired her form nonetheless. Then their light went off. So we bounced.
Disappointed we walked back to the camp. When we got there one of the kids who wouldn't join us was waiting outside the tent. He asked us what happened, had we seen any chicks. And I said quickly and without thinking, "Yeah, we straight up got our Jimmies waxed man, all of us." Hilarity ensued. I didn't think it was all that funny but these guys were in stitches. They laughed so hard they woke up the coach who ran out of his tent and demanded we all go back to bed. That night the older kids let me stay up in the big tent playing cards and shooting the shit. They realized the Pex wasn't so fuckin' bad.
That year was a big year for me and my pitiful band of ruffians. When it was over we had been kicked out of school, harrangued by the cops and had our Jimmies waxed enough times to start our own fledgling in crowd. An edgier, more raucous kind of in crowd. A bit like this one, in fact.

I heard last week that Hendry has been doing the asskiss of the century over the last month or so--that he's been telling anyone willing to listen that he didn't want to sign those huge deals for Soriano, Z, et. al., but that the Tribune company made him do it. Apparently, its been borderline embarrassing. Now he comes out and says "don't blame me, Derrek doesn't want to move and he has those 10/5 rights, you know."
Given that he's never said anything about player movement before and has never been willing to throw players under the bus, is this announcement by Hendry just another notch in his "honest man, none of this is my fault!" routine?

The first pitch was a meatball that Derrek badly missed and the methheads around me started chuckling. Three straight balls followed that and the next pitch lead to 100%, grade-a bonertime when Derecles launched it into the basket for a grand slam to make it 11-6 Cubs. I realize latching onto a player just because he did something while you were one of the 40,000 BHs in the stands is a pretty meathead notion, but fuck all of you. From here on out, Derrek Lee is enshrined in my Sports Valhalla, right next to his fat-chick railin' predecessor (minus a few Matt Stairss and Fred McGriffs).

I jostled around to see past the guy in front of me and saw Derrek taking his warm up hacks and I slapped my Dad on the shoulder to tell him. People calmed down enough that we were able to see. The first pitch was a meatball that Derrek badly missed and the methheads around me started chuckling. Three straight balls followed that and the next pitch lead to 100%, grade-a bonertime when Derecles launched it into the basket for a grand slam to make it 11-6 Cubs. I realize latching onto a player just because he did something while you were one of the 40,000 BHs in the stands is a pretty meathead notion, but fuck all of you. From here on out, Derrek Lee is enshrined in my Sports Valhalla, right next to his fat-chick railin' predecessor (minus a few Matt Stairss and Fred McGriffs).
