Title: LOST Star Trek
Post by: Chuck to Chuck on March 06, 2009, 08:16:06 AM
After watching the three trailers, I really have no feel if this is going to be good or awful, awful.  The music seems to be straight from Batman Begins.

Then again, it's from JJ Abrams and it's got Simon Pegg.  Might be worth a look.

And the chick from House as Kirk's mom?  Really?

The ridiculously good reviews are inaccurate.  Then again, Trek has been so bad for so long, when someone offers up a decent tasting burger, everyone yells, "STEAK!"

The movie is good.  It's a lot of fun, very humorous (the sequence with McCoy and Kirk getting on the Enterprise is hilarious), and the action sequences are great. The plot is bland and full of holes.  But it doesn't matter.  Quinto makes a great Spock and Simon Pegg isn't in enough scenes.  And the new Uhura?  More, please.  Time travel is a big part of this and the way the time loop is open ended made me wonder if there's anything like this in store for Lost.

Well worth watching.  The crowd applauded at the end.

I think this jives with what the review turkeys are saying. None of the reviews I've seen call it great cinema or anything, it's just getting solid marks across the board as a fun summer movie that doesn't worry too much about catering to the Trek geeks. I might have to check it out on the IMAX.

That's exactly what I was hoping for.  Live Free or Die Hard was dumb as a box of rocks, but it was fun as hell to watch, like a summer movie should be.

Not a great movie (weak story and a piss-poor villain), but it's just a lot of fun. Spot-on casting. Well worth the time and money.

I saw it last night.  I agree that the casting was superb, the plot is weak, but it's a pretty fun summer blockbuster.  The main problem I had was I saw the midnight showing last night (yes...I got in), which I really regret because the theater was full of Trekkies, so everyone was clapping after almost every line.  I haven't watched many of the past movies/shows, so I felt like I was watching some big inside joke that I wasn't a part of.  Therefore, a lot of the comedy is reserved for people who are very familiar with the series.  The Live Free or Die Hard comparisons are solid.  It's brainless, summer blockbuster fun that probably would be pretty terrible if not for the cast.

I would have bet 900 Vulcanbucks that there would be absolutely no way you'd miss seeing this dorkfest of a movie on opening night.  I would have won those 900 vbukaroonies too.  I would have spent them on condoms.  You know, Weebs, to use during intercourse with a girl.

So, here's the newest rumor, fresh from an inside source:

One of my good friends has a friend who is friends (sounds like a 90s teen comedy) with Sean Gallagher.  Apparently she got a call yesterday or today from him and he told her he's headed to Baltimore, and the trade will probably be announced tomorrow or Monday.  Again, it seems like a pretty unreliable rumor, but I've met this person before and I know she is friends with him, so take it for what it's worth.

I just saw this movie.  I enjoyed it; it was entertaining.  As a Star Trek fan, I can say that the series had died after Nemesis.  There are only so many movies that you can make that appeal to a core audience, rather than a general one.

I am pleased because this movie was able to respect actual science (namely, quantum mechanics) and create a new direction for Star Trek.  So, there are two timelines in Trek now.  One which has Picard and Janeway and everything like that, and this one which is able to tell new stories completely untethered from the burden of its history.  I completely positive this.

It was great to see both the sci-fi nerds and the general audience watching a Star Trek movie.  The die-hards will be offended because everything they know is over, but it gives the series and the franchise new life, which is exactly what it needed.  I'm pretty sure the folks at Paramount aren't losing any sleep over this.

So, go see it.

We get the original crew with all new stories of which is something we haven't had in a while. We also get the possiblity of the two timelines reconverging or something like that.

Good movie.

RedLetterMedia (the guy who did the Star Wars prequel reviews) has a new review up about this.

It's not nearly as funny as the Star Wars reviews, because he actually likes this movie.  I still enjoyed the review.

What say you, Gil Gunderson?

I guess his crew was cool with just hanging around, too.  I wonder how many of 'em went ghey.  And, if they did, I wonder how differently LA cops would treat them.  Stew wants to know for some reason.

The characters, plot, and villain are all upgrades over the 2009 movie.

The third act didn't work for me, but at least it made sense (again, a nice upgrade over the 2009 movie).

The third act didn't work for me, but at least it made sense (again, a nice upgrade over the 2009 movie).

Karl Urban is the balls.

I really hated this movie, but Karl Urban is pretty awesome.

Can we discuss the film here now, or do I need to use the spoiler tags, etc.?

Because after my initial thoughts last night, I think I'm more conflicted on this movie after reading through some of the critiques, reviews, and polemics.

Kirk was born in the Bronx, but he's from Long Island.

It's nice not being a fanboy of the old shit so I can actually enjoy this movie. I hope they make 1,000 more to spite TEC/SKO/Chuck/Gil

Even if you aren't a fanboy, nothing that Admiral Robocop does makes any damn sense.

It seems as though he was trying to cover up a mistake, and he's evil so he did evil shit.

Yeti is the perfect buyer of shit-for-plotting that's made Kurtzman and Orci the toast of Hollywood.

They've got one of those????  I might see this, now.  What movie are we talking about?

Also, I'm still ticked at you guys over "Enlisted" being cancelled.

Decent try.  Some good action, but at times impossible to follow.  They start out with all these interesting ideas for inner conflicts for the characters.  Then... forgotten. Given lip service at the end.

It's a space action film with characters who have names we recognize.  It's a decent popcorn flick, sub par Star Trek.

Remarkably unfunny attempts at humor the first half of the film, especially given Pegg wrote it.

I swaw this movie today, and I agree with every single word of the above.  Internet Chuck must have been asleep at the wheel for this review.

Well, given the crappiness of my suffering Dad's cable, I tried watching Beyond last night. I quit after an hour. This is what I get for trying to hold together a car conversation that had turned into dislike of scary movies by bringing up Dan Bannon.

If there was ever a time that grass could keep me sane, this is it.

No doubt. I love taking off my shoes and walking on grass. So relaxing....
