Title: AV Club's best film performances of the decade
Post by: Slaky on December 01, 2009, 10:16:26 AM
Here's a nice list to start a discussion from: http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-best-film-performances-of-the-00s,35851/

Here's something I caught in the comments but apparently people love Brick and they also love Joseph Gordon-Leavitt. I hated Brick so much I couldn't get through 30 minutes and JGL really just sucks.

Also, it seems like the best way to make this list is to have fondled a man on screen at some point over the last decade.

I didn't like Brick, either, though I did somehow make it through the entire thing.  I always assumed the people raving over it were just trying to sound smart.  I'm looking at you, TDubbs.

I never understood the raving over Training Day either. And when did Tdubbs say something that sounded smart?

I'm pretty sure he's the one who recommended Brick to me.  Maybe he was just being a dick.

I thought Denzel was pretty excellent in Training Day.

I liked Brick because it was like the old hard-boiled detective stories.  Sam Spade goes to high school.  If you hate the old detective movies, you'll probably hate Brick.

I still think I'm smarter than the rest of you, but that has nothing to do with whether or not you liked Brick.

Since we're only taking about things we hate, I hated the Squid and the Whale.

I was hoping to get on the hate wagon. Squid and the Whale is one I haven't seen but have heard loads about. Especially after declaring my unabashed hatred for Jesse Eisenberg I have a feeling I'd loathe this movie.

I haven't seen almost every single movie on this list.

Hell you could make that argument about most of this list. The one that stands out to me that was awesome (as I just can't rave over There Will Be Blood. I have sat through that twice. Fell asleep during part of it both times) was Christian Bale in American Psycho. That movie was awesome along with him. However, if one wanted to be pedantic, he could claim that movie wasn't actually in this decade as it was in 2000..

EDIT: But I guess they are looking 2000-2009 since 2010 hasn't happened yet.

Also, I know they mentioned it, but they have a Heath Ledger role that isn't The Dark Knight. I realize it's not critics' style to pick a big blockbuster hit like that where it featured a lot of explosions, awesome shit, and a fun fucking movie, but that's just idiotic.

Those who haven't yet seen Naomi Watts' performance in Mulholland Drive, ought to.

It's inspiring.

I like the way she moves.

I don't know what Yeti's talking about not liking (I think that's what he was getting at) There Will Be Blood.  That movie was awesomesteaks.

Yeah it was. And it's hard to argue with Daniel Day Lewis in anything.

As for Mulholland Drive, that's a movie I want to rewatch because it left me slack jawed the first time. That was probably 8 years ago.

That's not to say I haven't rewatched that scene with the brunette on the internet a couple times since then. With a friend.

I'm no Joan Rivers, but this was fairly memorable from the Oscars.

It's a great movie, no doubt. I'd say top 5, but not the best. I'd probably put Royal Tenenbaums, There Will Be Blood, and Marley & Me ahead of it.

This pick-the-list-to-shreds thing we're supposed to be doing isn't going so well.

Well, I've never seen 25th Hour. I got the impression this was simply a good movie, not 2nd best movie of the decade. Thoughts on that?

It was a completely forgettable movie. I have no idea what it's doing on these lists. OUTRAGE!

Also, what's with all these foreign films that I haven't seen? THIS IS AMERICA*

* Amelie, City of God, Oldboy, Y Tu Mama, and the Romanian Abortion Movie were all awesome.

It's quite good outside of the overly cliche spike lee "fuck these people fuck those people" rant
