To be fair to Chuck, that was a particularly joyless postseason, particularly given the fact that the Cubs were officially - by five fucking games - the best team in the NL that year.  They were THIRTEEN games better than the Dodgers, and went down without so much as a whimper, scoring but six fucking runs in the process.  I'm not going to pretend I enjoyed any of that.

I was at Game 1 of that NLDS. The place was a library.  It got a little loud when DeRosa homered, then silent when Loney went yard.  We left as Maddux came in to close out the game.  The next night, no one wanted to catch the ball.  When they got to LA, I barely wanted to watch.

Try being at Game 3 in LA.  By the fifth inning, I was doing everything in my power to cover up the Cubs shirt I was wearing.  That I was able to escape the parking lot unscathed still confounds me to this day.

Also, Fuck Manny.

That's why, while it may be discouraging now, hanging in there a few more years will make crossing the finish line that much sweeter.

It's a nice sentiment, but I don't think Cubs fans really need additional suffering to appreciate a championship.

Until you meet those Cubs fans who would appreciably suffer if/when they win a championship.  Some people think that the losing is just cute and Cubbily.

Not sure guys. I think I'm done.

http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/25113883-418/wrigley-field-deal-fell-apart-at-stormy-session-with-cubs-rooftop-owners.html

I haven't followed all this very closely, but I guess I have never understood why rooftop owners feel they have the right to a clear view inside Wrigley Field.

Who owns the view is a big legal question.

I understand that it's a complicated legal issue. But from a common-sense perspective, I don't think the rooftops owners deserve anything. Again, just me.

I would very much like to see someone raze their fucking buildings overnight. I don't care who is inside. the Cubs follow through on their threats to move somewhere else.

Seeing that hag cow Beth Murphy and her merry band of self-righteous freeloaders choking on their own vomit would make my year'd.

Seriously, guys. We need to get a federal prosecutor to get Tunney indicted and then have Ending Spending PAC back an Alderman for Lakeview who stands for stringent enforcement of building and fire codes, starting on Waveland and Sheffield Aves. Send in a couple building inspectors into each building and I'm sure they can find numerous code violations. Give them the 90 days or whatever the hell it is to repair it, then condemn the property and make the landowner pay for demolition. The Ricketts can then buy the land out of bankruptcy court, and you have your Wrigleyland campus and maybe even some sweet parking next to the fire station.

This is Chicago we're in, right?

Maybe it's time to re-evaluate my opinion on this.

I don't think anyone is surprised, but that's a big blow.

JennPex's mom said the Japanese television and interwebs have been focused on Tanaka to the Yankees for over a week. The other teams were listed as an afterthought in the reports and the Cubs were seldom if ever mentioned. I believe people over there who knew Tanaka personally understood that he wanted to pitch for the Yankees and that the negotiation process and courtship by other teams was a great big jerkoff.

Is she fluent in Japanese?

JennPex's mom is from Japan. Jenn speaks it but can't read/write it very well.

That's awesome. Glad everyone is enjoying my mini-tangent with Peck.

Thanks for reading.

While I can't say it was enjoyable, I can say that I found the mini-tangent difficult to wank to.

I succeeded, but it was a stretch.

We went to the movies last night for the first time in 5 years (Well, I took the kids to see Planes, but the first adult movie) and this is what we saw.

Pretty sure it was a good movie, though I spend the vast majority of time amazed by the fact that movie seats now recline and you pick your seats before you even get into the theater.

Is this universal?  Holy crap, what a different theater-going experience.

Also, it costs $40 for 2 tickets, one large popcorn and one large soda.

Also, holy shit Amy Adams sideboob.

But, this was a good movie.

I agree with everything Stew said.

I saw this movie over the weekend.  I can say that I was impressed by the directing, the acting, and the pacing of the movie.  However, I think this movie could have been strengthened a little bit more by having someone (anyone?) do a polish of the script, such as it was.  For the most part, I think that Russell gave the actors a vague outline of the script and then just told them to go with it, which is why the acting is so superb.  While I think Lawrence did a great job, I think Amy Adams was infinitely better, seeing as she had to play four or five (or six or seven) different characters throughout, all of which she did with aplomb.  I couldn't tell if Lawrence's accent, on the other hand, was breaking in some places, because there were moments when it was noticeable.

The soundtrack was also wonderfully selected and the score muted at precisely the right moments, which is why I think this is a great movie, but one that leaves you a "so what" kind of feel at the end; what was this movie ultimately about in the end, put another way.  This is the same way I felt about Argo last year, so I wouldn't be shocked if this wins best picture.

And Louie CK steals the show.

PS - If anyone here remembers the 1985 movie "Clue" I think you should all know that the actress who played Yvette in that movie also played Brenda the FBI cat lady in this movie.

I don't think there's anything constructive to be gained from any GM in any sport's public comments.

Last winter they spent money. This winter they haven't. The Ricketts family is making a fuckton of money off the various MLB contracts, and they have given Jepstink the task of building a winner through drafting and development, which is significantly more cost effective than running out and pissing away money on a guy like Cano, whose ROI will never translate into an actual profit.

Is it going slowly? Sure it is. But fuck it, no other plan has worked for a century, might as well let this one fully gestate.

I find it curious that you pooh-pooh a GM's public comments in any sport and then, at the end of your remarks, reference the Cubs' new plan, which, of course, was made public because the new President and GM said so in a press conference.

Something something run setting up the pass something.

PS - Your text message about the HDTV deal was funny, by the way...BBW!!!

This website says Cutler's deal ties him for 6th (with Romo) among NFL QBs in average annual salary.

http://overthecap.com/top-player-salaries.php?Position=QB

That actually seems exactly right to me given that Wilson, Luck and Kaepernick are still on their rookie deals. Throw in RGIII if you believe like I do that Snyder will throw stupid money his way. So, basically a top-10 QB is being paid like one for three years.

Seems really smart.

Tied with Rodgers for most guaranteed. Higher percent guaranteed than everyone except Rodgers. Higher total value than any of them.  Sounds like he doesn't finish the deal or that there's some sort of extension to age 42 or 43 about year 3 or 4.

Ding!

It sounds like every other NFL contract, replete with pretend years and pretend money!

(Totally Unlistenable tie-in)

According to genius should-be GM Steve Stone Hub Arkush, Kyle Long didn't improve after Preseason Week 1 whatsoever and everyone should calm down about Alshon Jeffery.  His "Look, I think really highly of ______ and we get along great" then shitting all over everything ______ does schtick is getting really frickin' old.  I wish the Score would find a new NFL expert.

Or, actually find an NFL expert to start with.

Hub is shit

Adam Hoag, who covers the Bears for The Score took him on a little bit regarding Long. He said he disagreed with Hub's statement that he "peaked in the preseason game against San Diego." He also said he graded him out better than Roberto Garza. Hub got indignant about that assessment and demanded to know who had graded Long better than Garza. Hoag stood his ground and said that he himself had done so and Hub, finally aware of what a tool he was being, kind of politely disagreed. I never really had any use for Adam Hoag other than some breaking updates that he has access to because he's embedded with the Bears but this was a positive in my book.

Even Matt Bowen refrains from smacking Hub down on the air when he definitely could. People around The Score treat Hub like he's Papa Bear or some shit. I don't get it.

I don't get it either. They're one big family of waterheaded dopes.

That said, Hoge published a fairly comprehensive look at the Bears heading into the offseason and I enjoyed it. He's definitely not Hub, that's for sure.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/12/30/hoges-2013-eulogy-start-of-something-special-for-bears/

Another cool story: that DJ Durkin guy who also covers the Bears took to Twitter to shoot down some of Hub's just plain wrong assertions regarding the Peppers situation and I replied "wait hub got something wrong?" and he favorited it. That's some passive-aggressive Hub hatred from that dude who I now like.

I now like Durkin as well.  I think Hoge's been fine in his first year on the full-time beat.  And I like Zach Zaidman.  Underscore fancies himself a guy who doesn't tolerate fools and is always first in line to call out wrong people on their wrongness, so it's especially odd that he's so fond of Hub.

Is Underscore a reference to Bernstein?

You have the receivers, the tight end, the running back and offensive line you need to be a top offense NOW. NOW NOW NOW NOW

Who knows what will happen over the course of one half season? Let alone the two it might take a young QB to develop in your offense.

Re-sign Cutler for 2 or 3 years and try to win with what you have NOW.

This is the 13th Amendment, motherfuckers.

I agree with pretty much all of this.

As are most scam movies, this movie is very intricate and demands constant attention, so stop staring at Amy Adams' side boobs.  As you know by now this is a version of the 1970s' "Abscam" sting that trapped a number of politicians into taking bribes.  The FBI got the idea and roped in a number of politicians who might otherwise have gone on to become President, or Supreme Court Justices.  It was technically not entrapment, but if it walks like a duck, etc.  The movie is well made, and for those of us who wore those clothes, both embarrassing and depressing.  I am not certain that the movie qualifies as entertainment.  Paul Newman and Robert Redford were constantly entertaining us in "The Sting".  The final scene of "The Sting" was the icing on the cake.  This movie doesn't try to amuse as it goes along.   It is not boring, but you are aware that it goes on for a very long time to make the point that it very solidly makes.  Christian Bale has made movies where he starves himself into an emaciated skeleton.  This time he has gained around fifty pounds.  He wears an intricate comb over and hairpiece that I think explains what Donald Trump has going on up there.  Bradley Cooper could steal every scene that he is in except for the fact of Adams' décolleté and Jennifer Lawrence's voluptuousness.  The best acting in my opinion was done by Jennifer Lawrence, or maybe her part was the best  written.  Her character is so destructively stupid and self deceiving that you will wince when she really gets going.

I'm just wondering if you still have those clothes.

Given the cyclical nature of fashion trends, they should be back in style in about 5 or 10 years.

You really want to see an 83 year old man wearing leather jeans?

No, mostly those giant ties and the huge collars on the shirts.

And the 70s confusing relationship with the varieties of the color "brown."
