Indian Food
« on: August 25, 2010, 04:36:55 PM »
Since the Beer thread runs the risk of getting hijacked...

Gaylord, one in River North, one in  Schaumburg.  I've eaten at the one in Schaumburg and found it delicious.

Shera Punjab on Devon Ave.  Of course, you can't swing a dead cat on Devon, between Western and Rockwell, without hitting an Indian restaurant, but I'm partial to Shera Punjab.

Also, the Klay Oven is steps from where I work.  Excellent lunch buffet.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

A place called Cumin opened up on Milwaukee Ave not far from my place in Bucktown. I've had it twice and it's quite awesome if not a little pricey. They've got a lunch buffet for 11 bucks that's pretty fantastic. That's where the money's at.

However, you then miss out on the enormous menu which covers both Indian and Nepalese.

Good times.

It's times like these I really do envy you city boys. There's a place out here called the Great Indian Restaurant or India House or whatever (the sign says one thing on the outside, the other on the inside) and I go there a lot for the cheap lunch buffet and it's pretty damn good, but I know that buffets are always the bland generic versions of the good stuff and I wish I lived in a place where I could go more authentic. Indian food is awesome.

The Bombay Palace is gone, right? I once went there in college with a group of four. The males were forced to wear courtesy sport coats, and we were seated way back by the kitchen. Then some guy came out with a four- or five-foot diameter platter of sizzling tandoori, "tripped" on a step and basically frisbeed it just over our heads. The subsequent food was unremarkable, but one of the women did disappear into the bathroom for half an hour to cap off a relaxing evening.

And now my hing has gone stale. Damn it all.

I really like a lot of the Persian stuff, because it tends to be hot, sweet and sour - dhansak (with lentils) or pathia (with onions) for instance - but anything with lots of fresh coriander in it is all right by me, too.  If I'm feeling ghey or I have to sit in a small enclosed space the following day, I might have a korma or a pasanda, something mild, sweet and nutty.  I love Indian side dishes : mattar paneer (cheese and peas);  sag aloo (spinach and potatoes);  tarka dall (lentils with garlic) and of course all the bhajis.  As for the starters and bread... I would sell my own children for puppodums, mango chutney and onion pickle, and naan bread is the truth.  Peshwari, stuffed with sultanas and coconut, or Keema, stuffed with lamb mince are my favourites.

God, I need a curry.

I never really had Indian food from a restaraunt that I truly enjoyed. I love Ethiopian and Thai but compared to them the stuff I've had in Indian joints is just not for me. The sweet spices like cumin are a big turnoff. However I have Indian friends in Indy and here in Chicago that I visit sometimes and holy fucking shit can they hook up some stuff. I don't know what any of it is called. I just shovel it into my mouth and smile.

There are two Indian joints right near each other on Randolph.  I've eaten at Veerasway, which I thought was outstanding.  I haven't been to the other, seemingly more upscale one across the street.

There is a pretty good Nepalese restaraunt, Khathmandu, just west of Boulder, CO in a town called Nederland, about 20 miles west into the mountains.

There is also a pretty good place in Evanston I've been to a couple of times that's pretty good called Mount Everest.  Too bad Fork hates Indian food.  Which is sad.

Of course, nothign really beats Devon St.  I know I've been to Indian Garden up there; and one of my Indian friends speaks highly of it.  Hell, I think they both do.

My problem with Indian food is when I go, I'm usually with a group so there are like 30 plates on the table or I end up going with someone who ends up just recommending stuff to try.  Therefore, I never remember what anything is.  It doesn't really matter as I don't remember many times when I have not enjoyed something.
