If the Cardinals non-tender Trevor Rosenthal I am 100% in favor of signing him to a two-year deal, managing his rehab, and turning him into a revenge-hungry firethrowing monster in 2019's bullpen. Maybe this should go into the I Admit It thread.

That strategy is known as "Dempster by Hendry."

No, Chuck. Dempster had made five relief appearances in six seasons before Hendry signed him. Rosenthal is already well established as a high-leverage reliever. There's injury similarity but that's it.

The "sign an injured high ceiling guy for cheap" was used by Hendry a few times. Dempster was the most obvious example. Chad Fox was another.

Before he signed them, were any of them ever as good as Rosenthal has been at his best?  Chad Fox had a few strong years, especially 2001, but never with as many saves as Rosenthal.

The Dempster signing wasn't bad. The man was worth nearly 20 wins as a Cub. I hate him as much as the next dude for all of his extraneous bullshit and his postseason failures/failures down the stretch in 04 (lest Huey yells at me for forgetting), but if you're just analyzing the transaction he was pretty fuckin good for a guy they got off of the scrap heap.

I thought Van Poppel was a little more obvious than Fox.

Good comp. I'd forgotten about him. Also, I'm not ragging on Hnedry for this. It's a smart strategy. You spend $1mm on a potential $15mm talent. If one pans out you've got gold. It's like investing in penny stocks.

Van Poppel was pre-Hendry.  It was either Lynch or MacPhail who took a flyer on him.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

So signing injured guys on the cheap and hoping they pan out isn't exclusive to Hendry. Casey Kelly is in the Cubs Giants system somewhere, and that's a Jepstink signing.

ETA: Must have let my subscription to the Casey Kelly newsletter lapse.

Literally every team signs guys like that at some point. It's pretty much entirely how the Pirates built their pitching staff before Taillon etc started coming up from the minors.

And he begat Kyle Hendricks instead of a disappointing (in hindsight) Randall Delgado because he didn't want to go to Atlanta.

And still not scoring despite Brad Hand giving up three (!) hits in the ninth inning. Why is that? Because old friend Dexter Fowler, standing at the plate with the bases loaded as the potential go-ahead run, struck out on a slider in the dirt to end the game.
