So how did the Bulls get into this mess? Besides Derrick getting hurt.

My take:

1. Over-valuing Noah and Deng.  Trades for these two could have been made long ago to improve the roster and weren't. There was a time when the pair had the potential to bring back an above-the-rim scoring threat of Carmelo Anthony's ilk. Try getting that for them now.

2. Over-paying for Carlos Boozer. Why?

3. Signing Rip Hamilton at all. Why?

4. Buying into the hype about benches and depth being worth anything come playoff time when other teams' rotations shorten up and superstars begin logging 40+ minutes per game. Please, by all means insert John Lucas the Turd at this juncture. Thanks.

I'll hang up and listen to more answers.

5. Their draft record isn't exactly the best either.

6. Not making trades of players who would be too costly to keep in the offseason (Asik) for players who can help you now (like a starting SG), instead waiting and letting them walk for nothing

Nothing on the Taj signing? 4 years for $38 million isn't awful, considering what others are getting.

Well, considering those other signings ARE awful (Toronto, looking at you), I don't know how to put this in perspective.

I mean, it's certainly less awful than DeMar DeRozan, but it feels more awful than some other recent, similar deals (Dragic 4/$30, Lou Williams 4/$21, Ryan Anderson 4/$36)

The only other option is to let him walk for nothing, so it's a good signing. The only time the bulls are mentioned in trade talks is when they want to avoid paying the luxury tax (Rip will be traded later this season), so they'll never trade a guy with value before his contract runs up. Which is dumb.
But better to pay them then let them walk I suppose.

In the last 48 hours:
Ty Lawson got 4/$48
Steph Curry got 4/$44
Jrue Holiday got 4/$41

You work with what you have, but those all seem like bargains compared with 4/$38 for Taj.

He's a nice guy off the bench, and admittedly I don't have a strong sense of what his trade value would have been with an expiring contract, but it's hard to get excited about this.

That's because the Bulls basically accomplished "not getting worse," which is a weird thing to feel excited about. Unfortunately, that's about the best they ever offer, so we have to take it.

We need an NBA version of T.J. Brown to throw around the joyful positive.

This used to be a great franchise.

I was reading that some people are convinced that Deng will be the one who gets traded this season.
