I don't know about hypnosis but it's definitely a piece of psychology.  Can't do a relatively simple thing due to a completely irrational mental block?  No problem, try this simple thing instead!  He hasn't made an error in, like, three years and a hundred games, and between him and Contreras they seem to have the running game locked down, so whatever he's doing, I'm good with it.
