Yesterday we took a way too early look at the Cubs hitters and they look an awful lot like last year’s hitters, even if many of them are newer, older and more expensive.
Today we’ll look at the 13 pitchers who have toed the slab, or slabbed the toad or whatever that saying is.
Marcus Stroman – Marcus has been impressive in two starts. He hasn’t allowed a run, just five hits and he’s struck out 14 in 12 innings. He credits his sharp start to the benefits of pitching in the World Baseball Classic and pitching in meaningful games in March. Since he’ll need to be traded to pitch in meaningful games in August or September, I’m glad he got that experience at least once this year.
Justin Steele – Steele went through the dreaded “dead arm” period in the spring and the Tommy John Disease Treatment Center got a bed prepped for him, but so far he’s been excellent to start the season. He’s given up one run in 12 innings with 11 strikeouts. Steele is the pride and joy of the vaunted pitch lab, as he’s the first Cubs draft pick to turn into a reliable starter for the Cubs since…I don’t know, either Greg Maddux or Mordecai Brown.
