I found the original but replies were no longer allowed. Since I don't want to spend the morning arguing with Louisanatards on IAN's facebook, I happened to see Kerry Wood strikeout the side for the Yankees yesterday.
Does anyone else fully realize that Kerry Wood may finally get a ring? I don't hate the Yankees at all but for those of you who do, I'd hope you'd put the hatred aside and lend your begrudging support to see Kerry get himself a championship. The man deserves it. May he strikeout every batter he faces for the rest of the year.
I hope he gets one but I'm sick and fucking tired of rooting for former Cubs to win a ring.
Just once I'd like to see current Cubs win one.

Since PawPawIAN loved the Yankees and would faithfully listen to them on his soundbox machine back in the day, I really can't hate them. I love Kerry Wood with every bit of my swamp heart and I hope he gets a ring.

THIS. In my younger, more meathead days, I got angry at them for "Not doing things the right way" and for "buying their way to a championship." Then I got older and realized that this is capitalism, that everyone buys their way to a championship, that the Cubs have the resources to do it, and that I'm just pissed that they don't.

Geography doesn't matter. The next Yankee hat I see that doesn't have a douchebag under it will be the first.
This is the one time I think we are allowed to "like another team for the rest of the season". Kerry was a fucking beast. He may have been hurt a lot but he was a badass, and gave me serious boners so many times.

By the looks of the inning of work yesterday Mariano's already given Kerry a look at his chemistry set and Kid K liked what he saw. I texted my sister's Yankee fan boyfriend about that yesterday and he got asshurt that I insinuated that Mariano was/is on the juice. I'm a bout 1 percent sure that he wasn't/isn't and could give a flying fuck either way. I've always liked the Yankees because they tend to beat the shit out of teams I hate, like the Braves. Go Yanks.

Put on a Yankee hat and prove my theory.
Yesterday's game was on TBS, so I saw Kerry's appearance. I hope he gets his ring, but he didn't exactly strike out the side. It was more of a mixed bag. He got the last out of the 7th and made Evan Longoria duck on a called strike, which was awesome. But in the eighth, he alternated between strike outs and four pitch walks, and eventually left with the bases loaded and two outs. The next reliever took care of the third out and no one scored. That was his first appearance after coming off the DL and he did arrive in Florida at like 4 in the morning, so hopefully not necessarily representative.
Also, given that he's a Yankee, the scraggly beard was gone. Couldn't help but notice.

I don't get it. I love Kerry Wood. I don't care how he all of a sudden got good again. I've always believed that Mariano was getting some help because he's throwing bullets every October when everybody else's bullpen is on the brink of disaster. I'm not saying that Brad Lidge could get on the juice and throw like Rivera but there are certain feats that just don't add up to me unless a guy's getting a little sump'm sump'm. Unlike most people, I'm not all that surprised or upset when I find out what's been going on.

I don't get it. I love Kerry Wood. I don't care how he all of a sudden got good again.
Couldn't it just possibly be pitching on a competitive team on a regular basis, rather than being trotted out as a closer for a team that never wins every 8 days or so? Plus, recovering from a couple of injuries? We don't have the Cubs to root for, I haven't watched an inning of baseball in 6 weeks, can't we just have this?
Speaking of which: is it morally justifiable to teach my son to root for the Cubs? I'm really not sure at this point. Not that there will be any stopping my dad from passing that along.

All those things you mentioned coupled with HGH are very possible explanations. But how is pitching more often, in more stressful situations supposed to help one recover from injuries? I'm just saying. I'm going to enjoy this too but you have to at least assume that something untoward is going on.

Kerry Wood can pull off a name like Kerry Lee. Considering that my son is related to me, I think there's an excellent chance that a name that makes Casey look exceedingly masculine is not the right choice for him.

Paul Sullivan told me he thought it was Barrett. But he could be covering for his pal Kerry. He also said that Kerry and Sammy got along quite well. But these are just stories one hears while taking the air in the best part of America's finest city.
I call bullshit on Barrett being the perpetrator. It was broken with one swing. No way it could be Barrett.

No, Chork.

Watching it now - fantastic. Jim DeShaies was excellent even then.
Also, I had completely forgotten that the Cubs signed Hideo Nomo.
Because Kerry Wood.

You have to love the number of guys who considered swinging and then just thought "fuck it", and headed back to the dug out.
Today is also Kevin Orie Sucks Day.

Your annual reminder (http://rabbithole.deadspin.com/happy-anniversary-to-kerry-woods-20-strikeout-game-1775179249) that Kerry Wood was the tits.
I am 36. This game was half my lifetime ago.
Kerry's was better.

Kerry's was better.
Well yeah...considering it was the greatest single game ever pitched...

Can you imagine how much better all of our lives would have turned out if Kerry would have had Scherzer's career like we all thought he would back in 1998? I bet we'd all be happier, stronger and well-adjusted without the soul-crushing disappointment that was Kerry's career arc. And he'd probably be exactly the same.
