OK A-holes.  It's fixed.  Enjoy the orange links, because I have no fucking idea how to change them.  I basically learned scripting in four days to fix this damned thing. - Andy

... I don't give a flying fuck about Halloween.

I've either greatly underestimated the interest in Halloween by people over the age of 10 or you don't understand how this thread works.

And yet, my FB feed is full of grown-ass adults getting dressed up for it.

Maybe it's a bigger deal in Australia.

My kids absolutely love Halloween.
When I was a kid, I loved Halloween.

I think it's a fun day and people who don't like it confuse me.

Just so I understand, the plan y'all want is to not only have him play the field for the first time since April, but to have him play a position he's never played before?

How awesome was The Ultimate Schwarrior last night? He's just so easy to root for.

No.

If Jake's going to get get his way and have Montero catch him instead of WillyCon and doesn't pitch balls out, I'll be very displeased.

Joe said he was leaning towards Contreras catching Jake because of the Indians running game. With Jake not caring about holding runners and Miggy's noodle arm any Indian that reached base other than Mike Napoli would just be awarded third to save everybody time.

This is encouraging - I wasn't aware Joe had made those comments. Huey beat me to the comment that he needs to start pitching like a guy who *deserves* a goddamn personal catcher.

No pressure, but tonight is the most important start of Jake's career. I have this totally irrational feeling that if he can recapture 2015 Jake tonight, he can recapture at least some of that magic over the next 3-4 years. If not, he's going to be what he was this year - a good/not great #2 starter - or perhaps regress into something closer to Orioles Jake. Like I said, totally irrational.

He's spent the last 3 months repeatedly talking about how he knows what's wrong and how to fix it and that he's still awesome. I'd like to see some evidence that his insane level of self-confidence is still warranted at this point. I know that last sentence is dumb, but I'm trying to reverse-psych him into a good start here.

Here's hoping he reads this message board then.

First off, I couldn't possibly be happier for everyone, especially Stew.  He was pretty much the first person I thought of after I got done thinking about myself.
And Slak.  Yes, people go through this, but it doesn't make your experience any less important or painful.

I was out with my wife on Saturday night for our anniversary. I was trying really hard not to check the score at the table, but she knows me well enough by now.

I went to the bathroom twice during dinner to tell everyone in the SlackBox that I loved them, because while I don't *know* many of you, I know you plenty well, and we've been through a lot of shit together.

I didn't get to see the final out live, I just saw it elapse on the gametracker on my phone so it was a little unemotional, though I was plenty jazzed.
I went home later, put the kids to sleep, hung out with the wife for a while longer and then went to bed to pass out.

As usual, she fell asleep before me and so I grabbed my phone and started going through Facebook and liking and watching everything I could.
And then...tears.  Not massive ones, but all of a sudden I was basically paralyzed by the realization that I hadn't had a chance to truly soak it in yet.

And I thought that was that.

And then Sunday morning I put on the TV and the I saw the highlights and heard Pat's call and I was fully gripped again.  Full on throat lumps, shortness of breath. The works.

I knew how much I cared, but I was still struck but how hard it hit me.

It's been a hell of a ride.

It's very interesting to me how successful at bats develop. Before he hit his homerun, Russell looked bad on a swing, and he looked pretty frustrated in the process. It speaks to his character baseball ability and solid mental approach that he didn't change his approach after a bad swing.

I'm probably being a semantic dick but it ain't got nothing to do with his character.

I'll concede your point. I just feel that not succumbing to the pressure/adrenaline, and maintaining your approach (i.e., playing with poise), is an example of your character.

Oh Kurt, don't you know that you're not allowed to bring about "character" around these parts?

The only thing that matters is statz, bro.

This isn't a computers versus grit argument, dingus. Obviously there is a HUGE mental aspect to the game - as evidenced by how much focus this regime puts on mental makeup. But when I think of "character" I think of how a guy treats his family and friends and acts as a citizen in general (e.g. Rizzo good, Chapman bad). Which is different than his mental makeup as an athlete. I'm probably splitting hairs here.

Clearly he was referring to his mental makeup, dingus.

Nobody will defend his bat, but let's not forget his momentum-killing throw-out at home in Game 4 that occurred before the Cubs bats came alive. The Dodgers might've had a very different inning, and game, had that out not occurred.

Except he weirdly took forever to get rid of the ball and Gonzalez was probably almost safe. But yes, his defense is obviously good. It just doesn't nearly make up for him being an automatic out at this point.

Joe is being stubborn about this.

That play still bugs me. He took so long that I thought I was wrong about where the runners were. I thought maybe Gonzalez made it to third at some point but I missed it.

There's no way Joe can play him against a lefty. If he needs and excuse to sit him, then there it is. He's no more than a defensive replacement at this point... assuming he can remember to throw the ball quickly.

Yeah I'd rather see Almora bat at this point than Heyward--you might lose a tic of defense in right, but not so much that it should matter.  Almora's a pretty damn good outfielder already.

I'm annoyingly on the record as being an Almora skeptic re: his bat, but I completely agree that I'd trust him at the plate over Heyward right now.

I could easily be talked into Jake or Travis Wood at the plate over Heyward right now as well.

Damn. Miss a little, miss a lot.

I would just like the Cubs to win the next two games so I don't have to hear Dodgers fans screaming at me that "IT'S A LONG FUCKING WAY TO THE NORTH SIDE, YOU GOATFUCKER," whatever that means, as I'm leaving the stadium.

It means you have sex with goats.

SKO rightly pointed out that I'm a math dummy. Bumgarner won't be able to pitch until game 3. So we'll likely see:

Lester vs. Cueto
Hendricks vs. Snork
Arrieta vs. Bumgarner
Lackey vs. Moore
Lester vs. Cueto (Bumgarner in relief)

I win, you all lose.

Shout-out to JD who lost in the finals by a tiebreak after finishing 4th in the regular season.

See everyone in the Spring.

I'm sure the cool internet thing is to not care at all but DJ LeMahieu being a voluntary healthy scratch for five games so he can protect this Coors inflated batting title is some weak shit.

Well, 4 games, but it's kinda dumb if you sit a guy for the final two games to preserve his .348 batting average when he has a .396 at home this year and your final 2 games are at home

And now he can throw his batting title into his contract negotiation this winter/next season, so it'll cost the Rockies money.

I know Weiss stepped down, so maybe he was sticking it to them, but why would a member of the organization hold him out of games if it is going to cost the organization money for holding him out of the games?

Maybe they're dumb.

This is the most anyone has talked about the Rockies since 2007.

2.7 fWAR in just 435 PAs seems good. He's 6th on this team in position player WAR (Bryant/Rizzo/Russell/Fowler/Russell/Zobrist), but he's 45th overall in the NL as a part time player. Cardinals Franchise Savior Who Is Better Than Kris Bryant According to Trueblood Stephen Piscotty has managed 2.7 fWAR in almost 200 more plate appearances. Matt Carpenter Who Is Also Better Than Kris Bryant has managed 2.8 fWAR in about 100 more plate appearances.

Some more digging...Javy would rank second on the Cardinals to Carpenter, third on the Mets (just a half win behind leader Cespedes at 3.2), second on the White Sox behind Eaton, and he would lead the A's, Royals, and Yankees in position player fWAR. He's a utility player on this team. God damn.

If Soler can't answer the bell for the NLDS, Baez gets to start. The depth of this team is insane.

Or, god help me, Coghlan, who now *vomits* has *vomits some more* managed to *coughs up lung* put up a 114 wRC+ and a .395 OBP as a Cub so far *passes out*

Either Bryant or Zobrist in LF with Baez taking their place in the infield will be the option Joe will go with, as the games will count once again.

Probably, but Joe does like Coghlan a lot, or else he wouldn't still be on the roster. Coghlan is slashing .304/.420/.446/.867 since the break. I'm just preparing myself so that when I see Coghlan listed in the lineup for game 1 of the NLDS I don't immediately go for the razor blades.

That's funny that you think we'd believe you own a razor.
