OK A-holes.  It's fixed.  Enjoy the orange links, because I have no fucking idea how to change them.  I basically learned scripting in four days to fix this damned thing. - Andy

I positive United for this. I have sat next to definitely a few Konerko-jersey wearing types on 4-hour plane ride, and I resent that because I'm not a fatass, I'm entitled to less real estate.

Was I the only one who was mystified by Jon Miller, Steve Phillips and Joe Morgan trying to explain OPS? None were really sold on the stat. Morgan thinks the stat could be misleading because you could have "unbalanced" OPS's (i.e., guys who get on base all the time, but really suck because they don't have that kind of power or guys who hit a lot of extra base hits but suck because they don't have the world's best OBA).

Morgan actually has a point, since OBP is more valuable than SLG, although if a guy has a 1.000 OPS, it doesn't matter how it's divided out, he's good.  Of course, this problem has already been addressed with better stats like EQA, which Morgan would know if he ever did any research for his job.  Even better, EQA is weighted exactly like batting average, so it makes sense to any baseball fan.  Even ones as dumb as Joe Morgan.

But Morgan's problem was mainly with singles hitters (and guys who walk a lot) getting inflated OPS.

So, in retrospect, I guess it's a good thing Milt got hurt.

He even gets hurt at the most opportune time!

But I think the final analysis from Joe Morgan was that it was a good stat because the best player in the NL led the league in OPS, so therefore it "validates" the stat.  I can't wait until he gets to wrap his head around GRIT one day.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that someone is faxing a print out of each day's posts to the booth and that Santo reads it. That's the only way he reads BCB.

I'm not understanding the "Little Pumas". What the hell is that all about?

Little Pumas? I thought that was the name of the Hillary Clinton 2008 Youth Club.

Am I the only retard that thought the 0 for 3 UM had at the plate was kinda impressive?     The results were shitty,  but the approach was great.
You can tell he's played this game before.

Intrepid Reader: Al Yellon

If you throw out Opening Day, Bradley hasn't had one decent at-bat all season. And he's batting .000.

Another Opening Day thought to give you that warm glow. The White Sox were snubbed by President Obama, who is taking an extended European tour instead.

So would this be a good time to say I saw Gretzky in a Krispy Kreme once?

Canada weeps it wasn't Tim Horton's.

To make room for Hoffpauir in the starting lineup, Jim Hendry took my suggestion from last October 22 (and to think, so many of you laughed at me when I suggested this) and, after several weeks' worth of secret negotiations carried out at the Paradise Bakery in Scottsdale (the very same location where Nomar Garciaparra himself, the subject of one of Hendry's biggest deals, was spotted buying bagels and coffee during spring training in 2005), Hendry convinced San Francisco GM Brian Sabean to take the two remaining years on Derrek Lee's contract in exchange for pitcher Matt Cain.

1) Yes, we all should have listened to Al last Oct. 22 and traded Lee for Cain. What a sage man.

2) Nomar Garciaparra eats? He buys his own bagels? Well, then, this is a perfect location for Hendry to talk trade. One of the players he once acquired once got breakfast there!

So... You can suck and it doesn't matter that much because your team sucks too and has no one better down in Rochester with whom to replace you.  And if you get lit up, everyone in town will be too busy wondering about the Ravens or the Redskins to care.

Yeah, what a career move!

Steve Chapman with a good take on an area of spending that never seems to get a mention from the fiscal responsibility gang.

QuoteThe real question is not why Obama wants to spend so little on defense but why he wants to spend so much. Since 2001, our military outlays have soared by 40 percent, after adjusting for inflation. And that's not counting the costs of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

That's a great read. I think defense should always be the top priority of a government. But our DoD has become a center of waste and abuse. I'll argue that some past increases in defense were necessary, but we could have been more efficient this decade. Interestingly enough, that was what Rumsfeld was brought in to do.

If you took away all the terrible arguments, bland postings, echo chamber commenters, bits stolen from others, tirades about appropriate and inappropriate comments, and record-keeping of the Cubs' record when he wears a particular hat or pair of underwear, Al's blog wouldn't exist.

If it didn't exist, it would not be bad.
