"Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that the Brewers have traded J.J. Hardy to the Twins for Carlos Gomez.
Hardy was a goner with the Brewers committing to Alcides Escobar at shortstop and the Twins have long been a rumored destination for him, so this deal makes sense. Gomez fell out of favor in Minnesota after arriving in the Johan Santana trade, but the speedy center fielder will be given a clear path to everyday playing time in Milwaukee as the replacement for free agent Mike Cameron. Really nice move for the Twins.  And I can't wait for Gomez to get 600 at bats for the Brewers next year.

Please, please Milwaukee...make him the leadoff man.

Obligatory "speed don't slump, dude" comment.

Hey, what ever happened to Morph's high school buddy from the shoutbox?

Didn't morph meet him at a boy scout retreat?

Promise Keeper's Convention.

They gave their word to stop at third.

So is the Cubs' roster full of promise keepers?

The Second City Hockey guys are doing a roadwatch at Whirlaway tomorrow night for the Phoenix game, for those who are so inclined.

I went to a playoff game roadwatch at the Whirlaway last year.  I positive the hell out of the bar and its cheap, ice-cold beer.

And there might be just enough semi-cute hipster girls there who want to learn about hockee to make it worth your time.

How much longer's the captain gonna be out?

Montreal tonight, then nothing till Nov 5.

Sit him tonight, and then see how it plays out.

Seabrook was back last night, correct?

Yes, he was.

Nashville has finally done it. They've ruined hockey.

Slak, there's this Lemaire guy you need to learn about.

And the Devils had to go and re-hire him, making at least six Penguins games a year brutal to watch.

Ex-Hawk Tuomo Ruutu suspended 3 games for cheapshotting Darcy Tucker.

Video of this dirty hit here:

There's a winning comment below on this link: " Darcy Tucker got Darcy Tuckered?"

Genius decision to take 3 before the half.

If you kick the 3, it's still a 4 possession game.  Scoring the TD is the only way to make it a 3 possession game.

OK, I didn't expect this when I made my post. Overreaction is not an apt term when applied to this game.

Really no reaction--this is so ugly it's not even worth caring.  It's still mathematically possible for the Bears to go 2-0 against the Vikings, split with the Pack, and go 2-0 against the Lions...but this team is a secondary and offensive line away from being good.  In other words, it's probably going to be a few years.

And Snakes on a Plane is on FX.

how huge was picking Ebbett up off waivers, considering Toews got absolutely laid out last night by Mitchell?

I'd be surprised if he doesn't miss some time. Ugh. What an ugly 3rd period. Fun game to be at, though. The 300 level looks amazing.

At some point last year Quenneville made the point to say that when a team gets a 5 on 3 it will change the game. If you score on it, you're going to win. If you don't score and they kill it, you're going to lose. The Hawks were up 2-1 when they failed to convert on their 2 man advantage and went on to lose. Since he said that I can't ever forget it and it seems to hold true almost every time.

Goddamn Canucks.

Fuck QStache's fucking idiotic notion of having Patrick Fucking Sharp on the fucking point during the fucking power play.

Theus.

Seuriously.

Why would a team call a time out before their own 5 on 3 power play?  Why give the opponents' penalty killers a chance to rest?

Because you get to rest 5 guys, they get to rest 3.  Also, since most teams have 2 PK units, they're going to send out the unit that wasn't on the ice and is relatively fresh anyways.

Since the offense has such a dominant position on a 5 on 3, especially an extended 5 on 3, the blow you give the D doesn't matter, but the strategy and blow your guys get can be the difference between a goal and a missed chance.

Cedric was blackballed.

"The Chicago Bears made running back Cedric Benson the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft.  After three disappointing seasons and a pair of alcohol-related arrests (drunken driving and drunken boating) in a one-month span, the Bears cut him loose.

So that was the end of it, right?

Not so, says Benson.

Benson believes that the Bears spread rumors about him and told the Bengals "nothing but bad things.""

Given the circus the media creates around Chicago and how quickly it paints good players in the worst possible light over things entirely unrelated to on-field performance...I have some empathy for Benson.  I'm glad he's getting a fair shake--which is more than most high-profile athletes get in the city.

So what about his mediocre on-field performance in Chicago (meaning the 3.8 ypc)

That he and Forte are averaging the same is probably an indictment of the o-line instead of either RB?

I don't know. Is there such a thing as "authentic Tex-Mex"? The salsa is fresh. The chips are warm. The fajitas are hot and tasty. It's good.

Yes, just not in Iowa.

But there's plenty of authentic Mexican if you know where to look.

And then there's Pancheros, if that fails.

Nick Roach is getting abused tonight.

This game is winnable, but Roach is incompetent, and Cutler's bouts of retardation need to stop coming in spurts.

That last TD rises to the level of a capital offense.

I'm sure this is all just part of Rick Perry's grand plan to secede from the union.

QuoteOrwell once wrote, "[He] who controls the past, controls the future."  Texas Governor Rick Perry has apparently taken the lesson to heart.  He's now removed a fourth member of the Texas commission responsible for investigating whether Texas (and Perry) executed an innocent man.  It's whitewashing at its worst.

By now, you're probably familiar with the New Yorker article showing that Cameron Todd Willingham was almost certainly wrongly executed for arson and murder.   In 2005, after the execution, Texas established a commission to investigate forensic errors, and the commission started reviewing the Willingham case.  In the course of its review, the commission hired a nationally recognized fire expert who ultimately wrote a "scathing report" concluding that the arson investigation was a joke.

The expert was originally set to testify about his report on Friday, October 2.  On Sept. 30, however, Perry suddenly replaced three members of the panel, including the chair, against their wishes.  The new chair promptly canceled the hearing.  More recently, Perry replaced a fourth member (he can only appoint four -- other state officials appoint the remaining five members).

What's amazing is not so much that Perry replaced the panel members, but that he felt secure enough to be so brazenly corrupt about it.  It's a sad reflection on the state of politics in Texas that a governor could commit such blatant whitewashing two days before the hearing.

Rick Perry makes George W. Bush look downright competent as a governor.
Blago vs. Perry?

Home field is going to play a big role in this one, but I'm going to give the edge to Blago on the grounds that executing innocents is worse than selling a Senate seat + shaking down companies for donations...and while the latter rightly leads to a federal indictment (which would be Perry's best comeback), the former ought to be subject to a charge of reckless manslaughter with no governmental immunity.

And before you ask me if I'm aware of the consequences of holding governors criminally liable for signing the death warrants of innocent inmates, I am, and I'd bring the charges myself if it'd put an end to state-imposed death penalties in the US.

Huet's no Partick Roy, but he's not this bad.

After watching the first three goals multiple times, putting the blame on Huet isn't fair--the defensive breakdowns that lead to all three were god-awful.  You can't give pros opportunities to blast pucks uncontested from between the circles, or give Iginla a partial breakaway.  The worst goals allowed all night were Niemi's.  But because he got to play second (and settled down), the goaltending story is how bad Huet is, when I don't think that's right at all.

Granted you need a goalie to make a big save when the D fucks up, but at the same time, it's not really fair to blame the goalie when the other team is handed golden scoring opportunities and buries them.  That's what professionals do.
