As much as I try I just can't get into this sound. Free Jazz or whatever it should be called.
It's probably my loss but I have tried to understand it for years.
I wish I could be more open minded because obviously it works for many listeners, just not me.

It's an acquired taste, and I don't listen to it very often, but when I get into it, it's amazing.

Dumb Q: would you consider Bitches' Brew to be free jazz?

That's more an early jazz fusion album. Free jazz has less structure. It can come off as pure gibberish noise if you're not into it.

FZ made some instrumental albums that are a pretty good gateway - Hot Rats and Uncle Meat spring to mind.

I'd say the gateway to Ornette would be the instrumental passages in Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica. In fact, old crotchety Van Vliet used to claim Ornette was just ripping him off, which is kind of ridiculous, but The Captain was always cantankerous.

And the Captain showed up on Hot Rats.
