Sorry, my eyes rolled out of my head after reading this part so I didn't finish your post. My wife is typing this for me.

Our TV is 50", so I guess maybe we're medium-ish TV people.

We recently finished watching this show about a month ago. 
We're not big TV people, so I don't have a big basis for comparison, but it's the best show I've ever seen.

We started watching The Wire last night and, while I assume it will be great, I spent most of the first episode waiting for Walter to come out.

I miss the Wire.  I may have to go back and watch it again (again).

People who know say that you should watch the first 4 episodes of The Wire back to back to fully get in to it. I don't know which I would put over the other but I love them both.

Yep. The worst episode was the finale, and the finale was still great. (Still annoyed that Walter essentially got away with it)

The Wire is more up and down than Breaking Bad (relatively speaking). And season 5 is a clunker.  But Seasons 1 and 4 are brilliant.
