I asked Santa to send a copy of Alvin's book to Huey.

Eagerly awaiting the review!

I had to work until today, two days before Christmas, in a school of 370 children. Two days until Christmas. It should be illegal.

Just gonna softball that in for the "it really must suck not having to go to work during the summer" jokes, huh?

Apparently, today is a holiday in Canadia.

Would someone explain to me what the hell is "Boxing Day"?  Is it a sporting event?  Does it have to do with turmoil in China?

At least as it was explained to me once, they take a day to box up all their Christmas schwag.

That Brit was explaining an urban myth to you.  A Christmas box is something which you give to your postman, paper boy, bin man, cleaner, gardener and so on, although these days it almost invariably just means cash.  It was traditionally given on the day after Christmas Day, which thus became known as Boxing Day.

The only reason today was a holiday in Canada and the UK, though, was that Christmas Day fell on a Sunday this year, and so a day off in lieu is given at the earliest following opportunity - i.e. the 27th.  In fact, Boxing Day, and the associated day off, was yesterday.

In Germany, by the way, they get eleventy bajillion public holidays, and if they happen to fall on a weekend, tough shit, you lose them.  In the Netherlands, we get very few public holidays and yet if they happen to fall on a weekend, even tougher shit, you still lose them.

Having lived here since 2004, my understanding is that it's the day you throw out all your empty boxes from Christmas. That's my wife's concept as well, and she's native. But I think the real "purpose" of the holiday is to have one more big sale day -- particularly because Black Friday wasn't always observed in Canada the way it is in the States (due to our Thanksgiving taking place in early Oct). Of course, nowadays, Black Friday sales occur in Canada and Boxing Day sales occur in the States. Any excuse to drive consumerism, I guess.

I get the distinct feeling that none of us knows what Boxing Day is.  But I can explain Hanukkah.  It is a minor holiday derived from an event that has morphed into a miracle.  God made one day's worth of oil last for eight days so that a group of Jewish thugs called the Macabees could clean up the Temple after chasing some Greek thugs away from it.  In my opinion that was a pretty weak miracle compared to the parting of the Red Sea.
If I had known that I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself.   (Plagerized from numerous other folks)

Also, I saw that on the wikis, so it's true, that in modern times, it refers to boxing up things to take back to stores.

I'm not even joking.  This makes for a fucking holiday.

That's exactly right. I had a Brit explain it to me on Friday

Well, he's a dick.

Also, I saw that on the wikis, so it's true, that in modern times, it refers to boxing up things to take back to stores.
