And the Cubs have signed Japanese closer Kyuji Fujikawa. The deal will be for two years with an option for a third season. Fujikawa will be in a battle with Carlos Marmol for the Cubs' closing job if the team can't trade Marmol. Fujikawa had 202 saves in Japan during the last 6 years. 1.36 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 12.4 K/9, and 2.3 BB/9 in 369 2/3 innings.

Would someone please tell me why a 60 something win team needs one multi-million dollar closer, let alone two?

This is part of EpHoyStink's strategy of having an all-closer pitching staff, which will hopefully lead to 162 no-hitters this season.

I tend to look at it as a very good deal for a very good pitcher. If/when the season goes belly up he's extremely tradeable.

The Cubs have money to spend and when you're talking about short deals like this I don't see how there's a down side.

Me neither. At some point the Cubs have to sign/promote decent players into all the positions. And this one doesn't break the bank or obligate the Cubs for very long.

A) They'll be down to 1 before the year is out.
B) The cost for the new guy for two years is about the cost of the existing guy for one year.
C) They aren't planning to stay at 60 wins in 2014. They are shooting for 81+ that year. And they'll need a closer for that. And they don't have a closer in the minors who will be ready in 2014.

Actually, the they don't have a closer in the minors who will ever be ready.
