Ian Stewart - hopefully permanently.  I know he's only twenty-seven, and I wouldn't rule out him being a productive major-leaguer before all's said and done.  I just don't want him on the Cubs' payroll while we all find out.

I have to admit, I have nothing against Stewart.  He was pretty good as a 24 year old in the majors and then he hurt his wrist.  He's entering his age 28 season and may be healthy.  It's worth a one year contract to find out and it's not like his production, or lack thereof, is going to be a pennant difference maker.

Especially since 3rd basemen are so hard to find now that people are paying stupid money for mediocre players.

At least while the Cubs suck, they're doing it cheaply and on short contracts. Besides, the two best prospects to be the Next Third Baseman are Baez and Villanueva, who are each at least 2.5 years away.

The fact that they'll probably both start the year in Daytona, and will move up to AA during the season if they get hot. Baez will be playing SS, even though he projects more as a 3B. But there's not going to be anybody blocking their way if either of them develops faster.

Only based on Castro's presence. His defense is more than fine at SS.

If Castro could turn the pivot, we could trade GOLD GLOVE WINNER DARWIN BARNEY once Baez is ready, since Castro's merely fine at SS.

Right. I think there's more than enough talent-bereft positions where these upcoming guys could potentially slot in. If they're going to trade Barney, they should probably do it this winter while his value is at a peak (both coming off a Gold Glove season and while he's cheap).

Just like if Vitters follows his pattern (stink it up for a year at each level before he figures it out), the Cubs can Ryan Braun his ass out to LF.

Joe Mather (pops champagne)

There goes the Golden Age of the Phillies.

If it wasn't true, I'd be offended.
"OF Joe Mather (30) — The sad-sack Cubs gave Mather 243 plate appearances last season. He played six positions and even pitched."
If I had known that I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself.   (Plagerized from numerous other folks)
