Seems lik a reasonable respons to 1 shitty outing from our #5 starter.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

I mean, yes, it's an overreaction... but it's also been more than one shitty outing.  The dude has walked 34 guys in 43 IP.

Unless you believe ERA is the be-all end-all he's been very bad for most of the year. A 4.64 FIP is bad, a 1.620 WHIP is bad, they're 3-6 in games he's pitched in because even if he personally doesn't allow that many runs he hasn't gone deeper than 5 1/3rd in any of his starts in the last month and that puts tremendous strain on the bullpen.

As far as fifth starters go he's definitely capable of being a very good one if his walk rate regresses back to his career average (which is still bad, but workable with his stuff), but if he keeps the walk rate where it's been this year he's probably going to have more games like last night because it's hard to write off his 3% HR/FB rate entering last night as anything more than good luck and he's going to keep giving up more 3 run bombs if he walks two guys every inning.

I don't want to make it a habit of agreeing with SKO about such things and I think the idea that he's 'only' averaged 5.3 IP per start is, well, not bad for a 5th starter (the issue is that Darvish and Q are averaging  5 and ~5.3 per, respectively) but I'm going to agree with SKO here.

Fangraphs also agrees.

Honestly Tyler Chatwood is low on my list of complaints about the 2018 Cubs. He could definitely rise if his walk rate doesn't go back down to where it usually is for his career but assuming he simply can't keep walking 8 guys per 9 he should go back to being a perfectly acceptable 5. If that walk rate doesn't positively regress than whooo boy. That said even when he's "on" his starts are undoubtedly aggravating as hell because it's just not fun to watch a dude walk that many guys. As long as Quintana/Darvish look like the guys they were in their last starts and the rest of the rotation end up being who they were supposed to be most of my actual long term concerns about this team will have vanished and everything should end up fine. I like this team a lot over the course of a full season if they're going to get close to normal seasons from Quintana and Darvish. If those two were actually broken this rotation becomes ordinary and the team becomes vulnerable.

Thanks to both of you for your statfaggotry.

My only contribution was I heard that Chatwood was the first pitcher since Zambrano with 6 straight starts, going 5 innings, and allowing fewer than four hits or some shit like that.  Could be some weird, fluky statistic (evidenced by the additional fact that Z was the first-ever Cub to do this or something)

Effectively wild, and probably not due to last, and it certainly came crashing down on him last night, and if it keeps up I'll be having Eddie Butler v.2017 malaise flashbacks.  But fuckall, he's the 5th starter, you fucks.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

That and it was an attempt at a joke at both Tyler Chatwood's and Chuck Gitles' expense. (And who can't behind that?)

No, it's doubtful Chatwood would be the No. 1 starter in front of Greg Maddux or Mike Morgan.
