I'm surprised that, with those glasses and all, Vance "I am the above the" Law couldn't see Will Clark batting .947 against the Cubs in the NLCS. Would have been nice to walk him and KevHead Mitchell in that Game 1 debacle. Thanks a lot, Vance.

Angel Salazar?  Is that one?  I can't even remember. 

Luis Salazar? The Midseason acquisition?

No, Angel was the Salazar of that magical 1988 season. He was the 1988 Cubs' version of Domingo Ramos. He scored 1 run in 34 games and produced a line of .250/.262/.300 before retiring as a Cub at the old age of 26.

Luis Salazar was a 1984 Padre (boo!), a 1985 White Sock (Jack McKeon called Roland Hemond in 1985 and said, "You send me your pothead Cy Young Award winner and his parole officer, and I'll send you Tim Lollar, Bill Long and 2 crazy Venezuelans." Salazar was one of the nutty Venezuelans), and a 1989 Cub (yay!)

Luis was acquired with Shawon's best friend for realtor and Boston favorite Cal Schiraldi, Phil Stephenson and cancer survivor (he's survived testicular AND Hawk Harrelson) Darrin Jackson.

Angel is also Venezuelan, but he did not put up a .325/.357/.425 like Salad Bar did in 1989. Unfortunately, his OBP never topped .300 in his 3 seasons in Lakeview before retiring at 36 in 1992. He now installs satellite dishes in Venezuela.

Assenmacher was ready and all Zim had to do was point to his right arm and that would have been the night for Maddux. There were 2 out and the bases were loaded, so there was nowhere to put Clark, but maybe Assenmacher retires Clark, the Cubs put up some runs somewhere in that game, and then go to the Stick up 2 games to none. (remember, they chased Reuschel early in Game 2). Which reminds me of another silly, useless fact: The losing pitchers in Games 1-4 of the 1989 NLCS were the only pitchers to win 20 games in a Cub uniform between Ferguson Jenkins and Jon Lieber.

Sutcliffe never won 20 in a Cub uniform, I'm pretty sure.  He won 20 in '84, but that was split between Chicago (16) and Cleveland (4).  I'm pretty sure that's it.

Here's something really banal...the first two pitchers to win 20 in a season while pitching in both leagues each pitched the Cubs to a championship...Hank Borowy in 1945, and the Red Baron in '84.
