The only thing that would get me would be "simple word processing needs". After getting my iPhone and my computer going to hell, my iPhone has basically been my PC lately. However, until my dialing wand comes in, I wouldn't want to use anything touch-related to type a lot of things out.

If you plan to do a lot of typing on the thing, you'd probably want a computer with a keyboard or a keyboard for your iPad (Apple sells a dock with a wired keyboard for desktop use, but you can also opt for a wireless Bluetooth keyboard like this).

That said, every netbook I've ever used (that's only a few) has sucked pretty bad in its own way. And I think the iPad would be much better for web browsing.

Yeah, the thing is though, I'd like something that would be more portable than the laptop, but doesn't need to be as burdensome as the laptop.  Mine has a 17 inch screen and is a beast to transport.

If I could use the iPad on the road for general browsing, email, and some light word processing, it'd work for me.

Sounds like the iPad then.  I think you'd be better off getting the Apple Wireless Keyboard and a good configurable case (so you can set it up widescreen or portrait whenever) instead of the keyboard dock.  If you'd like internet on the road, go for the 3G version.

Also, while you are at it, try out this  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dragon-dictation/id341446764?mt=8.  I find it works surprisingly well for just about everything other than arcane legal jargon.

You can get an excellent 14" laptop that would be super mobile and would have a keyboard.
