Is this tv any good?

I can't vouch for that particular TV, but I can vouch for Samsung.  I have a Samsung DLP that I love, and their customer service (which I've only had to use once in three and a half years) is very good.

Are people still buying plasma screens?  Is that still in?  I really have no idea about technology, but the wife said she'd be down with getting a bigger TV.

I'm sort of TV-dumb, as well, so I'm sure ADC or someone else will jump in and help you more.  People are definitely still buying plasmas.  I think once they burn out, they're done for good, though.  With a DLP, if the lamp burns out, you can replace it for a couple hundred bucks.  Plasmas have much better contrast than DLPs, though, and they're a lot thinner.

That's all I know.  The end.

I have a Samsung too, very good for sports watchin'.

Excellent.  Between you and Kerm, I've gotten twice the help!

Samsung is awesome.  Plasma, is not.  If you're getting a big HDTV, get LCD.  I'm actually being serious.

The difference between the two is pretty much insignificant now.  There used to be places where there were vast differences in the specs, but not anymore.  Typically, plasmas run hotter.  They both consume about the same amount of power (if you're all Kyle Orton about that sort of thing).  Generally though, plasmas display blacks better and look better in lower light levels (and LCDs better in brighter rooms).  Plasmas are slightly ahead in off angle viewing, but it's only a concern if you plan on hosting.  Plasmas can get burn-in (although you have to be Paris Hilton stupid to achieve it) and LCDs can get dead pixels.  View life is about the same for both.

Just bought a 50-inch plasma Samsung for a grand and it's the tits. I hear it's gonna be a $798 door-buster at Wal-mart on Black Friday.

Got a 46" Samsung LCD in July.
Everything about it rocks.
I don't know if that's relevant, but I just wanted to be involved.

Can't go wrong with an RCA XL-100 ColorTrak.  Seems as though they'll last forever if you don't mind rebuilding the horizontal-oscillator module once in a while.
