We have German 1. It's fairly slick (esp. if you use the microphone option) but still basically rote learning and geared to get a fairly low level of conversational German. My kids got bored with it very quickly - even when bribed with treats, etc. (And don't blame me for buying it, it's my better half's doing. She, of course, is always right. Even when she's wrong.)

I'm pretty sure I saw it at my public library. That would be a good way to give it a test run.

I took Spanish in high school and college but really learned it by practicing with people at work back when I worked in restaurants. If you're older, a good way might be to volunteer to teach ESL and strike up a friendship where you both learn each other's language.

Dios mio!  I recommend striking up a friendship with Rosetta.  She is older now and probably has so much more to teach.

I'm just going to bitch about my Spanish class. I took 3 years of it, and I am unable to recall about 90% of it. The thing that I think my teacher failed was the fact that in our class, we/she spoke english 75% of the time and Spanish 25% of the time. From what I hear about people who learn English, they speak English in 75% of the class and their native language 25% of the time. Is this correct? And did anyone else have that problem?

From my experience, what you speak in class is not as relevant as what you speak outside of the class. It doesn't really matter if you're speaking Spanish for 15 minutes of an hour versus 45 minutes. If you're speaking English for the other 23 hours in the day, you're not going to retain very much. Spanish-speakers who learn English here are able to learn it because they're immersed in it.
