Thanks for posting this, Huey.

I was a massive Dawson fan as a kid, but I'd never seen the dispute with Davey Johnson about inspecting his bats.

Reminds me of another great Dawson moment with Joe West.

That's a classic. I'm not sure what's more memorable about the clip. Dawson throwing bats or Dan Roan's shirt.

Best thread we've had.

Makes you think that even with all the amazing shit we're seeing beginning with last year into this one, we're on page 3 about a guy from 30 years ago.

From an ESPN story  "The Tortured Life of Eric Show"

"...Dawson chased Eric all over the infield, and even as first-base umpire Charlie Williams escorted Eric off the playing field -- honestly fearing for the pitcher's safety -- Dawson was still after him. "I think there was even a point where I kind of [would have] liked to have seen Andre get his hands on him," Gossage says.

Alone in the clubhouse, Eric was literally quivering. "I went back up there, after the game resumed, and I remember he looked like he lost a family member, like his dog got hit by a car," Grant says. "He was sitting at the picnic table, and he was writing a handwritten letter to Andre Dawson, apologizing."

But Dawson wouldn't accept the apology, and some insinuated the beaning was racially motivated. It was more Birch Society fallout; it had never gone away. Eric received a death threat and changed hotels. He didn't have the makeup to handle this alone. Dravecky and Thurmond were gone at the most inopportune time, and he was sinking. He didn't love the game enough to be able to stomach this."

Yeah I read that full article last night, Huey had posted it earlier in the thread. I feel bad for the guy. Dawson is no less of a badass but Show sounds like one of those guys who just never had a chance to find peace because his own dad was a massive fuck up.

I saw that whole thing from Section 527.  Bell looked at Essian something like 3 times before thinking, "Well, if this schumck won't do it, I'll go intervene."  Essian sat there until after Dawson was tossed.

Then Dibble threw at Dascenzo and the night really got fun.

The bat-throwing is pretty much the only enduring Dawson memory I have. I remember him hurling bat after bat and my parents basically rolling around on the floor of our living cracking up -- they thought it was the funniest thing they'd ever seen.

1) Dawson really was the best. My god.

2) How does Joe West still have a fucking job?

It feels wrong that one of the greatest runs in Desipio history is enveloped in this thread...or entirely appropriate I can't tell which but I only wanted to add that though I was in the bleachers for this bat-tossing (I recall it being a truly beautiful,  weird-orangish-sunset night that Joe West did his best to ruin), I do not remember getting sponged with beer.  I was in right field, though (and the footage showed a downpour in LF).  There must not have been a Rick Moranis film showing anywhere.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

Does anyone remember something the Cubs used to do in the late 80s/early 90s called "Kids Clinic" or "Cubs Clinic" or something like that? There would be designated games where if kids showed up 2 or 3 hours before first pitch, they could go out on the field and get pointers from players. I remember sitting in the outfield listening to Dawson and Dunston talk about baseball fundamentals. I just about shit my husky jeans.
