CHICAGO -- Nothing obstructed the view of Wrigley Field on Monday from a pair of rooftop clubs whose owner has refused to share 17 percent of his profits with the team.

But if Tom Gramatis hasn't paid up by the time the Cubs return home April 15, team officials said obstructions will be installed.

Cubs vice president Mike Lufrano said the team hopes it won't have to do that, but that it's unfair to other rooftop partners to let one rooftop get away without paying.

Gramatis could not be reached for comment.

Four years ago, the Cubs and the rooftop owners struck a deal after an acrimonious dispute that saw the team put up wind screens to obscure their views.

Rooftop owners agreed to pay the Cubs 17 percent of their gross revenues for the next 20 years.

Gramatis could not be reached for comment. If he doesn't pay up, views from two of his rooftop clubs -- at 3617 and 3619 N. Sheffield -- stand to be blocked by dark decorative banners hung from three or four poles positioned a few feet apart in foul territory along the right-field line.

He operates three rooftop clubs in the 3600 block of North Sheffield. At one location, he failed to share any of his 2007 profits with the Cubs. At the other two, he's trying to cut a better deal because the buildings are new and cost more than he originally anticipated.

The Cubs have filed a lawsuit that seeks to hold Gramatis to the 2004 profit-sharing agreement or force him to shut down.

But since a ruling in the case could be weeks or months away, they're pursuing what Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney has called "self-help remedies."

I'm astonished at how Stuart Levine could remain such a functional Illinois political hack, siphoning off so much cash from the state the "clean" way (kickbacks as opposed to good old-fashioned embezzlement), while raising money for BOTH major party candidates for Gov. in 2002. You'd think you wouldn't be able to keep everything straight after a couple stiff drinks, let alone after emptying the inventory of meth from Alsip and ketamine from Arlington Park several times a week.
