Ah, shit... reading that, I felt personally rejected.  If Wood was willing to take a year, there's really no excuse for letting him go - even if Hendry had had something far better than Gregg lined up.  So maybe you have to pay a couple of mildo over the odds?  Kerry's worth more than that to the Cubs.

The only possible rationale I can see for this is that Hendry really is as close to Woody as he says he is, and knows that Kerry will get a silly multiyear deal from some other GM - essentially, he's being cruel to be kind.  Still, Hendry's first priority should be the Cubs' welfare - not Wood's - and surely Kerry's big enough and ugly enough to make these kind of decisions himself?

After that article comes out, how does Hendry not call Wood or his agent (or both on some new-fangled conference call function that I don't think has been invented yet) and say, "Hey, Kerry. I fucked this one up. I thought we were doing what's best for you, but you want a one year deal to stay here? You got it bud. How much do you want? It's on."
