Recently picked up the self-titled debut of Van Halen - the third song (You Really Got Me) is outstanding.

So much better than the original. I think it was written by the Beatles or something.

It's pretty difficult to top the original version of most songs.  But Van Halen managed to do it here.  Not that the Kinks version is all that tough to top, so it was actually probably pretty easy for EVH and the gang.  The only other cover that's been done better was by -- you guessed it -- Van Halen yet again when they souped up and turned John Brim's "Ice Cream Man" right on its bluesy ear.  Delicious.

Dave Davies never played an unnecessary note. EVH is the gold standard of guitar wankage.
