As bad as the Cubs have been, at least they weren't swept in a doubleheader at home yesterday by scores of 19-10 (after leading 5-0!) and 9-8 (after giving up four runs in the top of the 9th). Human redneck soundboard Hawk Harrelson is now on suicide watch.

I took so much genuine joy in this when I heard it on the radio.  On the same day the Hawks were honored in the manner in which they were to boot.  What a disgrace; I'd be so disgusted if I were fan (I mean....been there plenty of times so I pretty much know how miserable and pissed off I'd be).

While we patiently wait out Year 2 of a seemingly coherent plan, I will not deny that I am thoroughly enjoying what a goddamn trainwreck that is on the south side.

I knew they'd bottom out at some point thanks to Kenny's doings but I didn't really think it'd be this bad. They're looking at the Cubs who are losing with a purpose and wondering what the hell their own is.

What's the plan down there? They have to start over.

I am not surprised that they're this bad and I even feel like they got there a year late.

Making last year's April-through August division contention a mirage, which set them up for this season's disappointment.  Things would have really been set back had Ventura actually accepted his rumored off-season contract extension.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

Nope. But that "minimum 4 games" is the rub.

4-game season series aren't exactly the historical norm in MLB, and (the far more common) longer series are obviously tougher to sweep.

There have been five 3-game season sweeps by teams coming off of 100+ loss seasons:

2009 Mariners (3-0 vs. ARI)
2006 Royals (3-0 vs. PIT)
2005 Royals (3-0 vs. LAD)
2004 Tigers (3-0 vs. ARI)
1997 Tigers (3-0 vs. NYM)

No wizardry. Just a lot of clicking, scrolling and copy-and-pasting on Baseball Reference.

So it's certainly possible that I missed a few examples.

Looking at my spreadsheet, it looks like I've got 139 total team-seasons from the World Series era that followed 100+ loss seasons and, drawn from those, 128 total season series where that team either swept their opponent or won at least 4 more games than them. The above are the 25 series with better than .750 winning percentages.

QuoteMagglio Ordonez, a six-time Major League Baseball All-Star who earned $133 million with the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers, will run for mayor of a Venezuelan oil town on the socialist party ticket of the late President Hugo Chavez, Businessweek reports.

This is so bad, I'd root for the Orioles over this fucking team, but I can't. Because they're a fucking drug and you can't kick it and they'll never win anything and they'll always suck, but it'll always be sunny at Wrigley and there will be tits and ivy and an old scoreboard and fucking Chads.

His association with Chavez isn't news. He is hated by Venezuelan ex-pats (not just Ozzie Guillen) and was boo'd by them lustily during the 2009 WBC. They chanted "Chavista" at him, which is the lowest insult that community has to offer.
