Well remember that what Chuck thinks about something is what everyone else thinks. If Chuck doesn't like the NBA and spends all of his time on twitter talking about how he doesn't like the NBA, it's safe to say no one is interested in the NBA. If Chuck doesn't really care about playing the White Sox six times a year, then the intensity is gone, sell out crowds and tv ratings be damned.

They aren't selling out anymore.

Cubs @ Sox
2014: 21,075; 26,332
2013: 30,631
2012: 33,215; 30,282; 32,311
2011: 36,005; 35,155; 35,403
2010: 39,364; 39,479; 39,682

That's a pretty steep and steady five year trend.  Now, maybe it's because both teams have been poor the last two years, but in 2012, the Sox were an 85 win team.

Let's see what happens this year, but I'd guess they reverse last year's awful awful showing, but do no better than 2012 levels.  Which would be 80% of tickets sold.

Pretty sure running the games in back-to-back two game series last year, with the Sox home games on Wednesday and Thursday nights with the Cubs already 10 games below .500 in early May, probably had a lot more to do with the piss-poor attendance than the bloom being off the rose.

Yeah, we'll see how the intensity is if both of them are sniffing .500 or better when the series starts.

Could see a big influx of Cubs fans if A) Wrigley is still a disaster and fans want to go to a decent place to see them play; and B) by mid-August, the Cubs could be very very interesting.

Looks like the White Sox are 0-for-$9.8 million, Marcus Semien, Chris Bassitt, Rangel Ravelo and Josh Phegley with that Samardzija acquisition.

It'll be fun to track them this year because they have a) Abreu who is truly a monster and b) Sale who is truly an ace.

C) They don't have much else (many will say their rotation is actually really good and maybe it is but I don't care)

So when they play middling ball for the majority of the year or have one of those typical Sox losing streaks where they average 3 errors a game I'm just gonna be laughing. Because even if the Cubs end up middling themselves, this is hardly The Year. It's A Year, the first of many.

I really don't wish the Sox ill (I think that rivalry matters a hell of a lot more if you know actual White Sox fans, of which I know two very mild-mannered ones), but I've kind of decided to root against them because of the Sun Times angle that the White Sox are somehow the better of the two franchises because they've sucked while throwing money at problems the last few years while the Cubs have sucked without the money-throwing. Also that weird thing last year where Theo and Co. got criticized for not going after Abreu while they had their own 5 WAR first baseman tearing shit up.

Also given my new geographic proximity to them and the fact that I get every damn one of their games on TV vs. like 1 in 4 Cubs games I've joined TEC and Eli as a part-time Royals fans, so fuck the Sox.

I welcome you to the Sox Hatewagon and in turn look forward to pulling for your Royals. I've always pulled for any team in the Sox'  division that's a threat to them and the Royals suddenly fit that bill again for the first time since the second Reagan administration.  Great fucking start to the season--I couldn't be happier.  Go Royals.

A former football player, Jeff Samardzija feeds off the energy of the crowd.  That's why he's already given up six runs in an inning at an empty stadium.

Okay I don't hate the White Sox like some of y'all do but this is pretty amusing.

6 game win streak! Over .500! Op Eds being written about the TWO contending Chicago baseball teams!

A week later they're four games under again, in what I'm pretty sure is the toughest division in the entire game. They're boned.

Samardzija: ERA+: 92. FIP: 3.71. WHIP: 1.246.  Yeah, that's going to get him $100 million.

If Rick Hahn was any good at his job, he'd be trading David Robertson fast. He'd look pretty good 8 miles north.

Maybe if it were up to Rick Hahn, but I'm guessing fans and ownership would be awfully mad if he gave up on the season in May after a huge spending spree. They're six back in the wildcard, which is obviously bad but still striking distance this time of year, so I'm sure they'll give it another month.

Wait, are you implying  that a 3.71 FIP and 1.25 WHIP are bad?
