I'm not saying this offense is good - and indeed, I don't think anybody really expected it to be - but we've seen worse (helloooo 2012) and in fairness, they did come up against two hot pitchers.  Tanaka and Pineda together, even before yesterday, were sporting a WHIP below 1.00 and an ERA below 3.00.  Also (I watched the game, guh), Tanaka was getting the low strike all afternoon long.

Actually, with the two shutouts last night, the 2014 Cubs did become the worst offensive team in living memory with an average of just 3.36 runs per game.  The only two seasons worse than that were 1916 and 1919 with 3.33 and 3.24 runs per game, respectively.

Working only with completed seasons, though, and assuming for a moment that CFiHP started watching the Cubs in, say, 1995, then the worst offense he can remember is... *drum roll*...

The 2013 Chicago Cubs, with just 3.71 runs per game!

Closely followed by the 2012 Cubs (3.78 rpg), the 2011 Cubs (4.04 rpg) and the 2010 Cubs (4.23 rpg)

If we can go back just a little bit further, though, the 1981 Cubs (3.49 rpg) were worse than anything we've seen since the aforementioned 1919, closely followed by the 1992 Cubs (3.66 rpg).  Last, but not least, Stew might remember the 1963 Cubs (3.52 rpg) as being especially sucky.

So, you know... CFiHP might not be right, but he's nort exactly wrong, either.

Ever since Theo the start of each spring training has had a fucking Bunt Tournament. This year they postponed the one in Mesa and kicked it off once the season started.

I can deal with the losing but this bunting is fucking rocking my nuts off.

Castillo bunted on his own yesterday according to Renteria, so there's that.

Castillo bunting: Renteria indicated catcher Welington Castillo bunted on his own in the fifth inning of Game 2 on Wednesday night. With runners on first and second and none out, Castillo laid down a nice sacrifice, but it wasn't what his manager wanted.

"We wanted him to swing the bat," he said.

The Cubs' Nos. 8 and 9 hitters were due up, as Kalish subsequently struck out and Barney flew out. Renteria has used the bunt often so far this season, so maybe Castillo thought it was the right move. It wasn't.
