I have a CD of the broadcast of a 1938 World Series game.  Except for its historical value, I find it to be unlistenable.  Not because the Cubs lost that game, and the Series, but because the broadcasters were cold, matter of fact, and impersonal.  I guess that was the style then.  I bought the CD years ago from the Cubs' Store.

This is listenable (although you have to wonder about why they'd pay for the talent to record this broadcast), but you'll be almost as despondent as the day the Gatorade was spilled on Durham's glove.

Costas was worse and Smoltz, although he doesn't play the dumb jock role, didn't really help.

The Cabrera double int he first was clearly a double right from the get-go.  The first replay clearly showed that fan reaching past the basket to touch the ball.  Yet Costas went on right up until the overturn to righteously claim that there's no way the fan touched the ball and there's no way anyone could possibly reach beyond the basket.  He was incredulous to the point of yelling about the amount of time the umps were taking on the replay.

Later int eh game, when Strop came on, he did his best non-apology apology calling his remark about Strop's dead relatives a "mis-speak".

He's such a fucking douche.

He actually showed the same level of emotion Coomer does when he does play by play. The game tying double had the same inflection as a guy reading aloud off the back of a shampoo bottle.

Just terrible.

Joniak is GOD AWFUL.

In the 8th, when Castellanas singled with the bases loaded, Joniak said "Cabrerra rounds second and scores."

Cabrerra started the AB on second.  He was rounding third.

In the 9th, Schwarber moved up to 2nd. Joniak said it was a stolen base. Coomer politely said, "I think they'll call that defensive indifference." Joniak laughed. He thought Coomer was making a joke. Coomer explained he wasn't.

When Coghlan advanced from first to second later in the inning, Joniak got it right. "Now you're getting it!" said Coomer.

This 105.9 FM WBBM fallback position is much superior to their crappy AM signal, I must say. I have to find a bearing with the Panasonic RF-2200 to even pull the signal out of the noise.
