Why would the Cubs put one of their better defensive outfielders at first base?  Is it as simple as he's lefthanded and white?

No, it's because if they want to get Colvin playing time it has to come at someone else's expense and D-Lee is the worst guy out there in a position that Colvin could possibly play.

Can Colvin catch?

Instead of the guy who's batted .300 with a .997 OPS in the last ten games?

Just scream "BENCH SORIANO" and be done with it, sir.

Well, since Colvin's actually good at playing the outfield, throw a shitty outfielder at first base and just tell him to stand there with one foot on the white square on the ground and catch the white leather ball with red stitches on it.  At the same time.  Might be tough, though.

Well, since Soriano would hop on every throw (taking himself off the bag), this sounds like a job for Fukudome.

Odd aside, but I dont think that Soriano hopped yesterday

Actually, he hasn't in a while.  But knowing this moop, he'd start doing it again.

(Does moop need to be capitalized?)

"Moop" backwards is "poom."   On the other hand "Moors" backwards is "Sroom."

Only a snaggletooth retard would risk getting spiked by putting his foot ON the first base bag'd.
I think he's more of the appendix of Desipio.  Yeah, it's here and you're vaguely aware of it, but only if reminded.  The only time anyone notices it is when it ruptures (on Weebs in the video game thread).  Beyond that, though, it's basically useless and offers no redeeming value.

Interesting article on the tradeability of Fuku (and Theriot, which would incite boners by many here): http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/the-trade-market-for-kosuke-fukudome-and-ryan-theriot.html

Fukudome goes, and we can see if Colvin's for real or just having a good run. (I did notice that his BABiP is .375.. ewww.)
