I don't get too overly sentimental about players anymore but I hope the Hawks figure out a way to keep Sharp around forever. That guy just fucking rules at everything.

My feeling has been Versteeg definitely goes and Buff probably stays.

Sure, Buff may only play huge in the playoffs, but that's when the Hawks need his beast mode the most. If loafing through the regular season is the price for this postseason's production, I think I'd take it.

Meanwhile, Sharp brings the highest cap hit among forwards not named Toews, Kane or Hossa at a very handsome $900,000 higher than either Steeger or Buff. That's nearly two minimum salaries worth of difference.

(Now, I haven't really played around with this thing much yet, so I'm not sure how realistic it even is to expect any of these guys to stay. The Hawks are already about $3 million over next season's cap with 14 players signed. That's $2.5 under with 13 if you clear Huet's cap hit by trading or waiving him, but add in the fact that Niemi and Hjammer will be looking for substantial raises here or elsewhere. It may well be that the Hawks will have to look at trading 3 or 4 out of Sharp, Bolland, Versteeg and Buff in order to make things work out.)
