...I don't think hitting Baxter for Denorfia against McCallister is that weird.

Baxter: .507 OPS vs RHP this year, .684 for his career.

Denorfia: .978 OPS vs RHP this year, .686 for his career.

I deem that weird.

I'd say the #'s in both first cases suffer from a little ole' smallsamplesizeenza...but interesting that the career #'s are similar, lending credence to Madman SKO's notion that ole' Progressive Joe may in fact be a little stuck in this otherwise "old-school" idea of handedness-based matchups.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

So the career numbers are damn near fucking identical. You're in an AL park and you have a left handed batter who you can send up because:

1. That's his jorb, his raison d'etre
2. You'd like to know if he's worth a shit
3. The dropoff from the player you're replacing doesn't exist
4. That's your jorb.

Not weird.

It's not Chris Denorfia's job to get a hit there? Do we really need to find out that Mike Baxter can't hit? Hasn't his entire career already proven that? Also, Denorfia is performing considerably better RIGHT NOW vs right handed pitching than Baxter, which should factor in somewhat, along with being slightly better his entire career vs RHP than Baxter. This is the dumbest thing someone has said on this messageboard today and people are out there defending David Ross.

...watching Max Scherzer's tidy 9 fWAR pace and re-reading this (which, if they have their numbers right, show the present value of Scherzer's contract at the time of signing only $10 M more than Lester's) has me wondering if Epstink made a nice choice last winter.

The rumor all along from guys like Sahedev and Kaplan was that there was something in Scherzer's medicals they didn't like, so we'll have to see if the injury they were afraid of ever comes to pass.

Put another way...it's been a few months into both deals. I will reserve judgment. If Lester is very, very good for a few years without missing significant time I'm going to be pretty happy.

I mean if they both end up being good and Scherzer ends up being better, fine. I'm expecting four good seasons out of Lester on this deal and hopefully at least one title. I get either of those things and we're good here.
