Cole was under the basket. You can't stand there. Weber got T'd up so that Purdue could win by 10. That's a nice and tidy sum. Forget this game. Your Illini have work to do if they want to avoid an 8/9 seed and a quick exit in March.

I would take an 8 or 9 seed right now and call it a day for the rest of the regular season and Big Ten Tournament. This team is just so damn inconsistent... Beating Michigan State at home and Wisconsin on the road while losing to Bradley and Utah in the same season...

They're better off with a 10- or 11-seed than 8 or 9.

It'd be best for everyone if they just stayed home.
Can you help me live a little more?  I expect good news.

I don't understand why a 10 or 11 is better than an 8 or a 9. It's kind of Chuckish to drop such a ridiculous statement on an unsuspecting messageboard and then just stand back and watch it splatter all over the room. Please explain.

I'd have to assume because they'd be more likely to be able to get out of the second round. That all hinges off of them winning the first round game, though.

Ok, I get it. I don't agree with it, but I get it. Well... maybe. Depends on who they'd get. I'm willing sit back to let this all play out.

I should have looked at the numbers before writing. A #10 is probably better than an #8 or #9, since you avoid the #1 seed in the second round.

#10 seeds beat #7 seeds about 39% of the time in round one and beat #2 seeds a little of 42% of the time in round 2.
#8 vs. #9 games are a 50-50 split, and the #8/#9 seed wins about 14% of the time in round 2 vs. #1 seeds.
#11 seeds beat #6 seeds about 31% of the time, but #3 seeds beat #11s almost 90%.

Looking purely at these percentages, a #10 seed has about a 16% chance of advancing to the Sweet 16, a #8/9 has about a 7% chance, and a #11 has about a 3% chance.

I think. I'm sure there is plenty of math fail in there.

I would assume some of the disparity also has to do with the fact that it seems
that weaker teams from strong conferences seem more likely to get the 8/9
type seeds, where as strong teams from weak conferences tend to get the 10-12
and strong teams from weak conferences have a higher chance of going on a roll.

Of course, I could just be talking out of my ass.  I lack BC's college basketball
acumen.

Speaking of taking it out, Minnesota has taken it to Purdue with a 10-0 run to take the lead here to start the second half.

The Big Ten title is still within reach. Then we'll just have to see how it all plays out. Purdue was clearly one of the nation's five best teams over the past six weeks. Without Hummel they'll probably be in the top 8-12. Things are still possible but... shit. Fuck my life in the face with a stained-glass dilrod.
