So is anyone getting the Evo? Seems like a much cheaper option than the iphone.
Would be interested in a review if so.

I have it right in front of me now.  Going to activate it.  stay tuned. . . .

Though, to be fair, TDubbs just asked the shoutbox what 4G is and why he has to pay $10 a month for it.

So... grain of salt.

It's awesome.  Get it.

A friend of mine got it and it's awesome, but fucking huge.  How the hell can you keep that in your pocket?

What are we talking about here?

Misgivings about New Jersey, I think.

Apple just released the new iFuckedup.

Gawker must have had a raging hardon for this story after the whole, we-got-caught-buying-stolen-property thing.  Apple contends it's unclear whether the phone was actually lost, or stolen, so their wording is interesting:

QuoteThe breach, which comes just weeks after an Apple employee lost an iPhone prototype in a bar, exposed the most exclusive email list on the planet, a collection of early-adopter iPad 3G subscribers that includes thousands of A-listers in finance, politics and media, from New York Times Co. CEO Janet Robinson to Diane Sawyer of ABC News to film mogul Harvey Weinstein to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It even appears that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's information was compromised.

It doesn't stop there. According to the data we were given by the web security group that exploited vulnerabilities on the AT&T network, we believe 114,000 user accounts have been compromised, although it's possible that confidential information about every iPad 3G owner in the U.S. has been exposed. We contacted Apple for comment but have yet to hear back. We also reached out to AT&T for comment. A call to Rahm Emanuel's office at the White House has not be returned.

That whole bit sounds fishy too.

Yeah...

Headline:

QuoteApple's Worst Security Breach: 114,000 iPad Owners Exposed

Lede:

QuoteApple has suffered another embarrassment. A security breach has exposed iPad owners including dozens of CEOs, military officials, and top politicians. They—and every other buyer of the wireless-enabled tablet—could be vulnerable to spam marketing and malicious hacking.

From paragraph five:

QuoteThe slip up appears to be AT&T's fault at the moment, and it will complicate the company's already fraught relationship with Apple.

Nick Denton must be yellow with pride.

It's amusing to see them report "another embarrassment" when their very company was largely at fault for the one they're citing.

AT&T's statement...

Quote"AT&T was informed by a business customer on Monday of the potential exposure of their iPad ICC IDS. The only information that can be derived from the ICC IDS is the e-mail address attached to that device.
This issue was escalated to the highest levels of the company and was corrected by Tuesday; and we have essentially turned off the feature that provided the e-mail addresses.
The person or group who discovered this gap did not contact AT&T.
We are continuing to investigate and will inform all customers whose e-mail addresses and ICC IDS may have been obtained.
We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted."

How it happened:

QuoteIt turns out that AT&T wanted to make logging into your 3G data plan dashboard a little easier on the iPad so they populated the email address based on the ICC-ID.

Hackers effectively used a brute force technique to get the system to spit out email addresses.  As of now, the email populating system is turned off.

So in other words, despite Gawker's sensationalism, this has just about nothing to do with Apple whatsoever.  Trumpeting this as a major embarrassment for Apple when you're the one trying to make it that is despicable.
You two wanna go stick your wangs in a hornet's nest, it's a free country.  But how come I always gotta get sloppy seconds, huh?

I can't imagine it's much bigger than an iPhone.  And it's skinny enough that it doesn't feel bulky when in my pocket, and I don't ever wear pleats.

How often you have to charge this bad boy? How is the 4G network so far, in terms of call quality (especially indoors) and dropped calls?

I had it fully charged when I left this morning for work at 6am.  It's currently 3pm and I have more than half a battery left.  I was on the internet with it earlier, sent a bunch of texts, etc.  The big thing is if you have the app killer, just run that whenever you can.  As for the 4G, I didn't have a smart phone before, so I don't know.  Dropped calls = never have had any with Sprint unless I'm driving home from work and pass by O'Hare.  I haven't dropped one yet on the Evo.

I got the Hero for $140 less than the Evo (shit, now it's $170 less - don't forget to go through Bing to get $50 cashback as well). Plan is also $10/month less than the Evo - $70/month for unlimited everything. I also have never had a smartphone so I don't have much of a reference point, but it's a great phone. Internet is fast, operating system is easy to use, my husky fingers are already used to the virtual keyboard after a couple days, and you can watch Friday Night Lights and NFL stuff in surprisingly good quality. I had a problem with the battery draining too fast but after some internet problem solving it's good to go.

I live in North Center. No problems with reception in my CONDO or in the East Loop inside a skyscraping work barn. For what it's worth, everyone I've talked to in the area who has Sprint has no beef with the service.

Preordering an iphone is exactly like buying Cubs tickets the day they went onsale.  Except there's no virtual waiting room and multiple windows doesn't help.  The error screen immediately after getting through is intact, however.

I notice that the EVO takes forever to charge.  My old phone could be dead and then fully charged in like an hour or so.  This one has about a quarter of battery left and it takes an hour and a half or more to charge.  I don't know if all smartphones are like this, though, but it's one negative that I have noticed.

I can't imagine it's much bigger than an iPhone.  And it's skinny enough that it doesn't feel bulky when in my pocket, and I don't ever wear pleats.

How often you have to charge this bad boy? How is the 4G network so far, in terms of call quality (especially indoors) and dropped calls?

bump.

I notice that the EVO takes forever to charge.  My old phone could be dead and then fully charged in like an hour or so.  This one has about a quarter of battery left and it takes an hour and a half or more to charge.  I don't know if all smartphones are like this, though, but it's one negative that I have noticed.

The Droid does this as well.  The time from 90% charge to 100% charge seems like forever.
This is so bad, I'd root for the Orioles over this fucking team, but I can't. Because they're a fucking drug and you can't kick it and they'll never win anything and they'll always suck, but it'll always be sunny at Wrigley and there will be tits and ivy and an old scoreboard and fucking Chads.
