QuoteRyan Theriot officially has won the battle with Kosuke Fukudome to be the leadoff man, and Mike Fontenot likely will be the regular second baseman.

Joyful optimism quickly dwindling.

You could have just bolded the entire thing.

How's this?

Why?

I don't get why it has to be so absolute.  Why not just use Fukudome leading off against righties and let Theriot lead off against lefties (if Lou's so intent on using him there)?

This isn't Dusty Baker we're talking about here. If Theriot isn't getting it done at the top spot, Lou will move his ass out.

I'd rather he just go one step further and understand that Theriot won't get it done, so the Cubs don't spend two months giving tons of at bats to him.

So, what lineup do you want?  What lineup is substantially better using the players they have?

1. Soriano, LF

6. Soto, C
7. Colvin, RF
8. Baker, 2B
9. Zambrano, P

Can we just let Zambrano hit every AB?

Can you find a spot for him on the 40-Theriot Roster?

Looking at the likely starters, I guess I'd go with something like:

1. Fukudome
2. Lee
3. Ramirez
4. Soto
5. Soriano
6. Byrd
7. Theriot
8. Fontenot
9. Pitcher

That's pretty good except for the six auto-outs at the bottom of it.

OK.  Now, looking at that lineup, do you really think the Cubs can contend with that?  I don't.

And, if that's that the BEST lineup, and the Cubs can't contend with that, does it matter where Theriot hits?

I guess I'm not really seeing your point.  I agree that the lineup isn't very good.  And no, the Cubs probably won't contend.  So does that mean we aren't allowed to discuss the team for the next six months?

Is Chuck saying it doesn't matter where Theriot hits so the Cubs should just go ahead and hit him leadoff? I don't understand this Chuck Evans post at all.

"Allowed"?  Sure.  But being disappointed that the Cubs will "spend two months giving tons of at bats to him (in the leadoff spot)" is silly.

They're going to spend 6 months giving a ton of at bats to a lot of players who don't deserve any at bats in any slot in the lineup.

I guess it's like this.  "Theriot will bat leadoff.  So what?"

Why?

Lou's gotta put eight guys out there behind the pitcher. SOMEBODY has to play second base.

I think I'm more upset about the first part.  I mean, I know lineups aren't supposed to matter and all, but why do they have to be so definitive about it?  Even against righties that muppet's going to lead off over Fuku?

This isn't Dusty Baker we're talking about here. If Theriot isn't getting it done at the top spot, Lou will move his ass out.

I agree. The leadoff thing doesn't bother me as much as the fact Hendry continues to stock the roster with shitty middle infielders.

So now that we're done discussing the Cubs for at least a year or so, what does Chuck want us to talk about?
