I disagree.  Hockey's almost over, and what little I've seen of the Cubs this season has been enough.  This World Cup is soccer's best chance to gain traction on the messageboard.

I'm with Powen.  I normally don't care much for soccer, but if you can't get into the spirit of something as cool as the World Cup, then fuck off.  This is one of the coolest sporting events in the world.  It's about 48 times cooler than the Winter Olympics and abut 146 times cooler than the Summer Olympics.

So, having said that...any chance that the US actually makes it out of the first round?  Is Slovenia any good this time around?  I'm sure England is going to clobber The US, but is anyone else a factor?

I can't see them beating England. The back line is terrible. They looked better in the second half vs. Turkey but the first half was a disaster. I think England is going to tear us up. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm of the same sentiment, but I figure I'll let these soccer hooligans have their time. I think it's a horrible spectator sport. Kurt's description of it being a party in the stands makes me think of the bleachers at Wrigley. So a bunch of soccer hooligan chads drinking their time away? Yay?

That said, I think it's a blast to actually play. I've subbed for a few people's indoor soccer teams when they needed help. It was a great time. Playing soccer is infinitely better than watching it.

Also, if I had one way to "fix" soccer for me, it would be to make the field smaller. It seems like there's too many breaks in the action. I would think with a smaller field, you'll get some more excitement going. But that's coming from someone who watches very little of the sport.
