SAN JOSE, Calif. — There are a couple of things Antti Niemi doesn't miss about Chicago, the city he helped send into a frenzy a few months ago as the goaltender of the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup championship team.

First, there's deep-dish pizza, often the one thing former Chicagoans crave the most.

"I can't stand it," Niemi said Monday at the Sharks' practice facility. "I like thin pizza."

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Garnet Exelby to an NHL contract and have assigned him to Rockford of the AHL.

Exelby, who had been playing for the IceHogs as their captain on a tryout, had to clear waivers before being re-assigned there. He is now eligible to be recalled to the Blackhawks.

Exelby has played 408 career games in the NHL, most recently for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He went to training camp this year with the New York Rangers.

"Organizationally, he gives us another added defenseman," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said before Friday's game against the Anaheim Ducks.

Quenneville would not speculate if Exelby's recall to the Hawks was imminent.

He looked good. I was at the game - I don't have any BH-like assertions to lay on you but here's what I know:

I cannot fucking wait to get Kane, Hossa and even Stalberg back into the lineup so we can push some of the turds out of the top 12 forward spots. I saw so much Hendry my head was spinning. Almost 13 minutes of ice time for him at forward. Frightening.
