Tangent: A friend of mine raised a really interesting point. Can anyone justify the existence of a marching band? I know there are a handful of schools that honestly care about theirs but honestly, most people at a game don't give a shit about the marching band. They come on the field at halftime all trained and dressed with their expensive, giant instruments and no one is paying attention. People are taking a piss or getting food. The only people that care are their parents. Some of these people even get scholarships. They take up a couple hundred prime seats at a college stadium that could be milked for revenue. Instead, the college is not only giving them free seats - they're clothing them in capes, giving them huge instruments and in some cases even paying for their college education. Hell, they even spend money to fly all these clowns with their capes and big ass hats and massive cargo to away games and bowl games.

Why? Does anyone care?

Are marching bands an unbelievable source of revenue that I'm just not aware of?

Black people really love marching bands.  The cool kinds.  The ones they make movies about.  Remember that one with Nick Cannon?  Nick Cannon is hilarious.  He's the host of America's Got Talent now.  I'm guessing that a really cool marching band would do pretty well on that show.  I'm not sure it would win, but it would definitely get a few rounds in.

Hope this helps!

Some people really love marching bands; not me.

I once made the mistake of sitting down with a college friend who told me he wanted me to watch a "really awesome" video.  Ghey porn?  No.  Worse.  It was a marching band competition.

As I trembled and beads of sweat ran down my brow, he held me close to his bare, hairy chest and I realized, "I fucking hate marching bands".

Dammit, I was just starting to get a Nathan Steelhouse chubby and he had to go and throw 3 picks. I still like this Illinois team.

The key is for Zook to make sure they don't get too down about this loss. A win would have been great but they made MSU earn it and they need to make sure that they don't lose sight of the next two very winnable home games. Win those and you're one win shy of a bowl. That's really all I'm asking for this year.

Agreed one-hundred percent.

Indiana and Minnesota at home seem winnable.  As does Purdue.

Northwestern and Fresno will be fun games too.
This is so bad, I'd root for the Orioles over this fucking team, but I can't. Because they're a fucking drug and you can't kick it and they'll never win anything and they'll always suck, but it'll always be sunny at Wrigley and there will be tits and ivy and an old scoreboard and fucking Chads.

My mom loves marching bands. She always complains that they never show the band on TV during halftime anymore. I don't ever remember them showing the band during halftime, so she must be complaining about something that hasn't been done in thirty years.

As pointless as the halftimes show is, I really like hearing the band play during the game. I dig the atmosphere. Hell I can't imagine watching a USC or Michigan game without hearing the band, and I hate their damn songs.

And sousaphones are pretty cool.

Doesn't that help Zook keep his jorb? Is that what Illini fans want?

It's not like he's doing any of the coaching this season anyway. If he can continue to be the fine recruiter that he is with none of the actual coaching responsibilities going forward, I can live with that.

A bowl game would be nice too.

I just want to see him crap his pants and run off the field. That's all I want out of this season.
