Would anyone else besides me like to see Paul Vallas return to Chicago to make a run?

Certainly.  He won't get support, tho.  The deal makers hated him because he was a no-corruption guy.  They dumped him when he ran for governor.  What did we get?

Yes, but just barely.  Vallas didn't get support of the machine elders in 2002 but he still nearly pulled it off.

Maybe Ryno will return and run the city while somebody else manages the Cubs. What about Ditka? Amirite? I'd vote Ditka in a heartbeat.

I don't think Obama's running for Mayor of Chicago in 2012, so it's not even close to the same situation.

You bring up Rahm, and putting aside my personal opinion of him, does he really have a chance to be mayor? When he ran for Congress in the 5th, whom did he really run against? Remember, a lot of people are going to be running and identity politics at its racist worst was becoming a great Chicago tradition until Daley got his stranglehold on the office.

That seat has always been in the Machine's control so you're right--it doesn't matter what kind of race you run so long as you've been appointed by the powers-that-be. 

Also, replace the date, and imagine that Daley died instead of retiring, and this article rings as true today as it did when Royko wrote it.

When I saw you'd posted in this thread, I assumed Chicago was calling up Pittsburgh's mayor from the municipal minor leagues.
