On "60 Minutes" last night retired Justice Stevens repeated the canard about Babe Ruth calling his shot in the '32 Series.  Even Ruth wouldn't claim that he called his shot.   I can forgive Stevens for not carrying the day on Bush v. Gore and Citizens United, but isn't it bad enough that the Cubs lost the Series?  Do we have to have a Superman myth to explain the loss?     (No.  I wasn't there.  It was at the height of the Depression and I couldn't afford to risk losing my job.  I had four kids for whom I was paying college tuition.)

Perhaps Root's daughter is not an unbiased witness.  But it is true that like the Billy Goat Curse the story took on a life of its own.

Did she say that he did or did not want to be remembered for one pitch?  Apparently, he gave up another homer right after Ruth's hit and got yanked from the game.  That was a great pitch too.

Those 201 wins don't really count as they were in the regular season.  I'm also thinking of writing his daughter a strongly worded letter telling her that wins are actually not that great of a statistic for pitchers; so while his numbers are interesting, they're not really impressive.

All kidding and BS aside, I'm glad Stew posted this stuff.  I didn't know that much about Root, so it was a good chance to read more about the myth and his history as a Cub.  I still think one of my favorite pitchers was Mordecai Brown.  Koyie Hill ain't got shit on that guy.

So Ruth and Gehrig badmouthed the Cubs every chance they got, and the Cubs rode Ruth's ass hard throughout the Series. Any excuse to take a piece out of Babe Ruth would not have been declined.
