Excellent move.  Good years, irrelevant dollars.

So do you now hope against hope that Pena has a horrible year so that nobody has any designs on extending him?

I'll save my feelings on extending him until actually seeing him play 100 games in a Cub uniform.  But a one year deal on a guy who hit .196, but has been good in the past is a good deal.  Especially when you have no other options for the position.

He can field the position fairly well if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure he'll have a terrible April and the Wrigley morons will be clamoring for Hendry to get that kid Hoffpauir back from Japan.

Yup. Looking at his career splits, April and May are his two worst months. OPS is nearly a hundred points higher after the All-Star break than before. But he's a great fit for our Cubbiez because he hits better in day games than in night games.

At least 87 walks each of the previous 4 years.  His slugging last year looks like an anamoly.  Despite a .407 SLG, he still had an OPS+ over 100.  His BABiP was .222 last year!

This deal seems more and more very unlike Hendry.  High reward, not too much risk.

I was ready to kind of hate this, but what the hell.  I positive.

And despite hitting .196, he still got on base more frequently than Soriano did.

Bah.

Number 4 is Gorman Thomas and number 6 is Andre Thornton.  I always liked those two.

Is that Gorman Thomas or Fork, circa 1986?

Without knowing which prospects would need to go the other way, I can tentatively positive the heck out of this move.

Also:

QuoteThe Cubs have also continued to kick the tires on a trade with the Texas Rangers for first baseman/third baseman Chris Davis. Even with the signing of Pena, Davis could be a valuable player coming off the bench for the Cubs next season. Texas is interested in 27-year-old catcher Robinson Chirinos, who played at Double-A last season.

Also said to be in the mix in a Davis deal is right-handed pitcher Darren O'Day, a relief specialist who was 6-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 72 games with the Rangers in 2010.

I don't know what to expect from Davis. I don't care if they get him or not. But O'Day could really help out. The 72 appearances last year are kind of alarming though. He may be due to break down and suck already but that's what the fuck HGH is for. Ya heard!

If the sole price is a 27-year old catcher who's never made it past AA ball, it's probably a small price to pay to watch Davis K every 3 ABs as a pinch-hitter.

I'm surprised you'd co-sign the deal of any catcher from the Cubs farm system. Save for one.

I wasn't Gorman Thomas. I was Carl Wilson in 1986.
