My expectations are low for the other still-unnamed minor leaguer out of two, considering:

Quote11:23am: Fernando Perez is going to the Cubs, according to Miles. The 27-year-old outfielder has a .234/.301/.351 line in 107 big league plate appearances. He hit .223/.280/.299 in 426 plate appearances at Triple-A last year.

Maybe you missed the part where the Cubs got Matt Garza?

I'm sure you can find the link of HuffPo or something, it's a pretty awesome story.

Right, because the Rays just decided to hand Garza over and there's absolutely nothing else in the deal except him to talk about.  Also not tolerated: Tongue-in-cheek discussions of trade throw-ins.

The guys over at the prosportsdaily.com forums think Garza is an EXPENSIVE Randy Wells. I think they aren't factoring tangibles like talent.

Can I believe that most Sabermetic-inclined fans both have a better, more informed opinion, while still maintaining that a huge majority of them are smug, smarmy pricks?

Jesus, what a smug batch of douchewhistles.

This guy is the king.

"Yeah, most of hte fanbase is thinking

"OMG, they got Matt Garza, isn't he good or something!?"

The fan base isn't interested in cost analysis, economics, or actual benefit. They just like names they heard on Sunday Night Baseball and during hte Playoffs. This is why people are thrilled over Garza but probably would be underwhelmed if the Cubs spent the exact same package on, say, Mike Pelfrey or Jonathan Sanchez. Or could you imagine how pissy the average fan would be if it was Scott Baker or Gavin Floyd? "

If you can't see that Chris Archer's 50th percentile projection is basically Matt Garza, then you have only yourself to blame.

DPD. Lots of people seem to be missing that Garza is under Cubs control through 2013, so saying "the Cubs won't compete this year, why bother?" doesn't make a lot of sense.  The trade makes the Cubs better this year and they'll still have Garza in his prime years when they're really setting up to compete (hehe) in 2012-13.

I strongly dislike people who try to appear smart by learning the name of a talented Minor Leaguer and going apeshit when he gets traded. It makes them feel smart if that prospect ever pans out and it's very low risk if he doesn't because nobody will ever remember or care. They learned this from Steve Stone and I think he should be castrated for it.

And you can just pretend like you never actually protested that much because that thread got Ratto'd, just like I did with Bobby Hill Hee Seop Choi Sean Gallagher Jose Ceda Eric Patterson Ricky Nolasco Sergio Mitre Renyel Pinto Felix Pie.

I think I'll be happy with this trade if Garza's next 3 seasons are as good as Lilly's first 3 seasons as a Cub. And I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation. They're both flyball pitchers coming to the weaker NL from the AL East and they've got similar numbers (Lilly strikes out a few more guys, but Garza throws harder).

Yeah but to quote prosportsdaily, if one of those losers the Cubs traded for Garza becomes an average everyday player this trade is a loss.

So in four years when Hak Ju Lee is hitting .245 and slugging .248 with 20 steals you will REGRET THIS.

Nah, Hendry can just trade Garza back for him. It's win-win.

One of the good things about getting old is that by the time Archer and Lee are good Major League players I will have forgotten that they were ever in the Cubs' system.  Because one of the good things about getting old is that by the time Archer and Lee are good Major League players I will have forgotten that they were ever in the Cubs' system.

Clearly Garza isn't ELITE, per my sources at prosportsdaily, he's a 3rd-5th starter at best. It doesn't matter that he doesn't cost a whole lot each year. Chris Archer, who I've never heard of before last year, was destined for greatness since childhood. Barry Stanton already promised a HOF vote for him, Archer just needs to round out his portfolio by helping out the autistics. Or maybe the dyslexics.
