Santorum leads with with 39%, followed by Mitt Romney at 27%, Newt Gingrich at 15% and Ron Paul at 10%.

A new national poll of 1,000 likely GOP primary voters from Rasmussen gives Herman Cain a slight lead at 26 percent, with Romney close behind at 23 percent and Gingrich in third at 14 percent. The remaining Republican candidates all received less than 10 percent. Only 32 percent of those polled, however, considered themselves "firmly committed" to their preferred candidate.

As much shit as I give them, I have to admit that the GOP primary probably wouldn't appear to be nearly as big of a clusterfuck trainwreck as it now does without an assist from the media's need for instant big picture analysis at every single turn.

Had Santorum won Michigan tonight, I'm sure we would have heard all about how everything was going from bad to worse for Mitt.

"Romney needed to win both states, but especially Michigan..."

But Romney won. And, in the end, those 3-4 extra delegates will have made all the difference...

In politics, winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. The score sheet only shows "W's" and "L's"...

...

But, winning is winning. And when Romney needed to win — a loss in Michigan would have crippled his campaign beyond repair (or close to it) — he did.

...

Romney's victories on Tuesday night aren't determinative. The fight for the Republican nomination will go on. But, the alternative would have either ended his campaign or forced a top-to-bottom overhaul as he sought to show that he knew change was needed.

When we look back in the history books, all it will say is that Romney won Michigan and Arizona. And that's the best he and his team could have hoped for Tuesday night.

All he does is win.
